Ummm, Ohio State WTF?

Ohio State's team will go back to being awful and whole track team will follow suit.

They do have a 3:59 miler this year. But yeah I agree. If another Chris Nelloms comes around in Ohio they might win a Big 10 title in a down year like they did that one time.

Robert Gary did an amazing job when he was there with the talent he had. If they had one individual NCAA qualifier it was rare in distance running before he took over. And he didn't do it through national recruiting either.

Ohio State was always a school that had weak teams but some amazing individuals like Tom Byers, Mark Croghan, Butch Reynolds, Robert Gary, Dan Taylor in the shot. Chris Nelloms. Never broke through as a Big 10 traditional power teamwise in anything.

Gary was the only head coach I've seen in 30 years watching that program that did anything there other than Russ Rogers briefly when he had a great group of sprinters.

And like most Ohioans it baffles me. An athletic budget probably in the top 3 of all D1 schools in the country. And in a state that is no worst than 6th nationally for in-state track talent.

And Minnesota and Wisconsin beat the rest of the conference in track year in and year out. Or definitely the last decade.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Jeff See ran 4:06 as a sophomore in high school and you're saying Gary didn't get talent?

Jeff See is from Middletown OHIO. He is saying Gary recruited mostly in Ohio, not nationally like some other schools.

The mens program has gotten a few distance runners over the years but have gotten virtually none of the top women in the state that includes, Sunni Olding, Maggie and Emily Infeld, Bridget Franek, Brooklyne Ridder, Claire Durkin, Stephanie Morgan, and Angela Bizzarri.

They did get Sarah Schulze though. (To play basketball)

Any video of the race, or at least the last lap? Splits? How'd it play out?

Great comeback year for Bobby April. Pretty sure he was injured the last couple of year with no real results. Ran a stellar 5000 earlier and now a 7:53 at 3K

I don't see why it's important to point out that Gary had success with only Ohio guys. The fact he didn't recruit out of state talent was stupid. Ohio State could have been a hell of a lot better if he recruited sub 9:10 guys from across the country.

He didn't recruit nationally and that's his fault. He is making his program less dominate because he was unwilling to recruit talent elsewhere.

Ron Helmer has mostly Indiana guys and guess what they killed OSU.

Being a Ohio high coach that has sent talent to OSU.......With all the talent, money and facilities not to mention tradition.....OSU under any coach has stunk. their are tons of HS coaches in Ohio that could do better then they have now.....especially in girls distance.

They take no pride in the "team" at OSU. Runners come home and complain about how Gary plays favorites and ignores some runners to just train his top few.

You mean "dominant". Dominate is a verb, dominant is an adjective.

Why the hate?

Not to worry super smart Ohio high school coaches, new OSU distance coach announced to the team he was "going foreign", so you can go back to whining about OSU not recruiting any of your in-state kids. This time last year, terrible OSU had already made Nationals in cross, had a miler and a DMR to the indoor National meet along with a 4 x 4, a 400, weight thrower, and a shot putter. And they had landed the #2 recruiting class in the country according to Track & Field News.
