"For over 40-years I have watched high school runners attempt to break my record in the indoor 2-Mile and for 40-years I have waited for it to be broken. It is an old record and should have been broken a long time ago. Pre got down to 8:41; Rizenheim was close; Last year it almost got caught at 8:40.07. FINALLY it has fallen.
People tell me it is GOOD the record still stands, but for me it is a shame to see it last so long. A record is only good when it is BROKEN. My running was to INSPIRE other runners. An inspired runner inspires ten other runners who in tern inspire a hundred runners. Finally the record is better and very soon it will get better again and again.
When I set that record, the world record was around 8:31. Now the world mark is around 7:57. The high school mark should be down around 8:08. That is what Lagat ran in winning the race. If my record had not lasted such a long time maybe a high school kid would have gone out with Lagat and run that fast. It is just as totally possible for that to happen as it was for me to run 8:40 way back then.
I think the problem with that record was that so many athletes ran to try and break the record instead of trying to win the race. They PACE instead of RACE.
Last year too I watched as a high school boy set out to break my mark racing off pace way behind Lagat. He ran behind two pacers. In the end he just missed the mark. But up ahead of him there was a great race being run and he should have been up there racing it."
