My online calculator shows Ms. Cain's 4:08.25 for the mile is equivalent to 4:07.84 over 1500m.
Using the same formula, El G's 1-mile time of 3:43.13 was the equivalent to a 1500m time of 3:25.15 (his record was 3:25.0, so not far off the actual).
His record is 3:26.0. Her 4:28 is worth 4:08. Thank you for playing.

I corrected my typo. It was 3:26.15 equivalent, not 3:25.15.

Man I have to say I wouldn't be surprised she's on something. That's just ridiculous of an improvement from even her last record. I'm skeptical, definitely, how can you not be? I'd love for it to be legit, but it really is quite amazing she beats all the collegiate/PRO women. But maybe she is just THAT good. I guess we don't know until something comes up.
She ran 4:11 last year. What should she run this year?
I called it on one of the prerace threads. I called Mary (Decker) Cain to not be able to beat Reid but to finish in the top 3 and to beat Hasay. What is crystal clear for sure now is that NCAA competition has nothing to offer her.
If her time really projects 4:07, I have to wonder if she can make the US WC team this year. Alice Schmidt ran 4:05 and a fraction last year and didn't quite make it, so Cain would need to improve some, but I'm not so sure she can't.
That tops Darlene Beckford's 4:32.3 junior mile record.

You need to get a new calculator!
it's a freekin'calc chart a generalized average of a might have been event......... trying to give variations on =/- #.0x by #.0x is nuts round to longer tenth and have wack at it with 1.08
my mental rule uses this as seat of the pants on the fly good enought to mirror real life numbers
4:10->4:30=+20 sec at that pace
at 4:00 pace we see +19.5 sec
at 3:30 we see +16.75
at at 4:30 we see +21.5
This whole thing is like someone guessing when we catch a the freekin' unicorn it will be light gray and someone else betting on it being medium-light gray.
I posit that there is more difference in a chewed up end of the distance relay carnival cinder that was poorly maintained and a freshly rolled well maintained cinder facility than between the later and the early all weathers.
I stand corrected. Thanks. Amazing that she brought it down from 4:06 in Oct '83 to 4:01 in Mar '84.

OK. When Zola was 17, she ran 4:01.81 for outdoors.

She still has room for improvement, as far as that goes. Salazar hit the nail on the head when he commented that she tends to "fall asleep" in races. Had she not done that at about 1100m and gotten gapped by Reid, she may have won.

here's an idea - take that field for the wmns mile, add Jenny S and Shalane and take it on the road. Or maybe I have very dark speed goggles on.

try and find an elbow "thrown" or her tripping anybody in this video. I'd say she ran a very fair and FAST race.

Puberty will hit, once she grows breasts and gets hips it is all over for Cain. Maybe Salazar can do some hormone trickery and keep her a pre-teen forever!
Just like it did for German Fernandez! He's never been the same!

Is she part of the tribe? A chosen one? Maybe half chosen one by her looks. And that Jaw/chin keeps getting shaped...
All right, for my edification, any body have computations for an equivalent female time for a sub-4 minute mile and has Cain broken it yet?
If I was Salazar I would be trying to hold her back at this point and start thinking 6 - 8 years out so she doesn't get ahead of herself, go through a puberty downturn in performance and quit running because of it
