I agree with most of this. I think the seal will be much slower as they are bulky and not really runners. The nordic skier could very well be in the 15's but I'm thinking more like 16:45 since running is specific. Also the TdF'er could be a sprinter who I see in the 18:00 range or a guy like schleck who could be 16:45. I'd love to watch el g run a 5k now, lol

Correct.
I would be SUPER surprised if most pro tennis players could break 20 mins for a 5k. An alpine skier? Not even close (of course there is always individual exceptions).
I think the avge TdF rider would be substantially faster than a tennis player.

Just one mistake... Oblamo DNF
Seal - 22:00
Pro Tennis - 21:00
Alpine - 22:00
Nordic - 19:00
TdF - 17:30
El G - 15:30
Obama - 28:30
Symmonds - 14:50
I would be very surprised if a pro tennis player couldn't hold 6:00 miles for a 5k. They probably aren't doing much if any running speific stuff, but having the endurance for a 3 hour match in the heat is no joke either.
TdF rider only 17:45? Same thing. I know it's not running specific but those guys climb some absolutely insane mountains and grueling courses. I guess the question is right now/today. A TdF rider, or a skier, would probably improve a decent bit just by having 2 5k's to race or a week to run to sort of figure out what they're doing.
interesting question though.
One of the guys around here finished 2nd at the 2012 collegiate championships in the 20K nordic skiing race and he ran 16:00/33:0x in a couple of the local races last summer.
Navy Seal: 22 flat
Pro Tennis Player: High 14s (when I was in HS, a semi-competitive guy was running mid 18s on the roads. one would think Federrer/Nadal/Murray/etc. are in much better shape)
Apline Skiier: >21 (their conditioning is designed for double-leg movement, and their quads are way too big)
Nordic Skiier:
Nordic Skiier: Sub 14 (I knew guys in HS that were running low-16s who were very good nordic skiiers. Once you get the hang of this sport, the motions are very comparable to that of running)
TDF Rider: ~14 flat (give or take. although their quads are massive as well, lets not forget Lance past his prime is running in the mid-high 1:10s for a half marathon during the ironman. a BIG consideration is lots of these guys are on EPO so their endurance isn't out of question)
El G: 15:xx (we are talking about a 12:48 guy in his prime here)
Barrack Osama: Well over 25
Symmonds: Mid 15s (lets not forget his 800 training is american based, not kenyan based)
Symmonds is not fat but is built too chunky to run more than 4 laps. Like him though, he brings a bit of swagger to track!
You're all wrong, Nordic skiers have regularly crossed over to become world-class 5k runners. It's partly because XC skiing is like running, but mostly because Nordic people have strong barbarian roots and make good athletes.
Nordic skier 13.50
El G 18
Obama 35
tdf rider 21
symmonds 17.40
elite alpine skier 38
pro tennis player 25
and navy seal 26.
The top tennis players are very fit. I know it may look like it's not overly demanding as they get breaks every few minutes but they regularly play matches for over 3 hours on consecutive days. Andy Murray goes to Miami every December to train and actually does reps on the track. They are by no means scintillating but I think he was quoted as saying that he used to do 10-12x400m with 1 minute rest at an average of about 70 so I think he'd do a fair bit quicker than mid 19's for a 5k.
Anybody know the story of this photo?
I say Obama can go 22:00, he exercises, quit smoking, Kenyan.
This is late, but no, the nordic skier is 100% under 15:30, and possibly (maybe) under 15. It is a very cardio based sport. My friend who skis competitive xc is 17:30 and is 14 years old, and does not train for running, but for Xc skiing instead.
Nordic skier definitely way under 19!! What are you sayyyinnggg

Obama ran a 5:38 1500 DURING his presidency. I think a 22-23 minute 5k would be about what he could do today.
