We never know anyone do we, even our sons/daughters and spouses. That's my thought.
Symmmonds said something like that in the NY Daily News.
“Oscar is one of the most mild-mannered, nicest, down-to-earth guys I’ve met. It kind of blows my mind,”

I think Nick comes off as a bit of a west-coaster. You know "everything is cool, let's smoke some ganja". Monti comes off as "all knowing" after the fact.
Monti is a tool. A smarmy name-dropper, who loves being known for knowing great runners.
Those two opinions need not be at as much variance as it might appear. Manipulative people (including those with anger issues) can be very charming, that is how they get what they want. Nick did not have occasion to see that underlying problem, and many did not. It occurred enough for him to have a reputation if one looks closely.
Monti had s slightly different take yesterday on Twitter.
"Had memorable dinner in Sicily in '10 w/@OscarPistorius & @JaneMonti1. Such a great guy! Shooting just HAS to be an accident. Heartbreaking."
Why WOULDN'T Symmonds have a different take from Monti?
Hanging out as a VIP at meets with a successful colleague (who, incidentally, you'll never really have to race) is a bit different than actually working with a person, and certainly different from living with someone as a partner.
I hope this is obvious.
So Nick basically saying he was surprised to hear the news is "defending"?
Good to know.
I agree with the poster that said we never really do know our spouses, sons, and daughters. The fact is that a lot of people have a dark side.
I heard that Ted Bundy was very charming.

Thanks for posting that. Not sure how to respond other than - unbelievable.
Seems like Monti was just an opportunist. At first trying to gain respect on twitter for when it seemed he'd be cleared. Then when the WSJ says , "Hey anyone got anything negative to say about this guy?" he switched sides and bashed to get his publicity.
I just don't understand why anyone would rush to defend someone before they knew more facts. It really ruins one's credibility.
sometimes I wish that Nick Symmonds would just shut up and run. The guy has a mouth on him, he loves to run it in front of the media and "make waves" as Andrew Wheating put it.
His defense of Oscar isn't even about Oscar. It's about ballooning nick's ego and putting himself in the limelight again.

If we are talking about 99% of the people whom we 'know' then I agree that we do not really know them.
If you do not know your spouse, son, daughter...then there is a problem.

Not sure why you feel a need to take issue with Symmonds comments. He was asked about Pistorius' character and so he shared what his experience with Pistorius was.
Symmonds is not operating in some official capacity on this case, so why is he supposed to wait for your "facts"?
I don't get knocking Symmonds for answering questions by a reporter. I'm sure the reporter was calling around to people who know Pistorius asking for comments. Symmonds gave him a comment saying he was surprised, not defending Pistorius. Big deal.

The first amendment of the Constituion protects freedom of speech. I missed the clause that is doesn't apply to world class 800m runners.
If you don't like freedom of speech move to a different country.

If the report that the victim entered Oscar's home at 8pm and time of death at 3am is true, then the intruder story seems bogus.
EXACTLY what i was thinking. truly telling of david monti when he's so two faced such as this. the guy does a lot of good for the sport publicity wise, so i want to like him, but this is just shameful spotlight begging, not to mention delusional tweeting before all the facts are in. yes david, it just HAS to be an accident.

I was badly quoted out of context, and e-mailed the reporter to complain about it. I scolded her for trying to draw any kind of line between somebody who was mad about something relatively trivial (like not getting picked up at the airport), and committing a horrible crime. That's ridiculous. The reporter wouldn't budge and left the quote in her story. I won't speak with her again.

Wait, wait. Did you just tell someone that they should move to a different country because they expressed an opinion that you did not like? Oh yeah, and you used the (obviously inapplicable First Amendment about freedom of speech) to justify your position.
I could not make this stuff if I tried. You leave me (nearly) speechless. Yours has to be some sort of record for absurdity on the LRC boards.
