Now that I'm reading more about the older guys and their training, is it just me or was Steve Jones actually pretty close to nailing more of what we're seeing in some of the modern training methods.
In comparison to say Geoffrey Mutai, there were some similarities.

Both runners had workouts or quality sessions on T/Th/S, and both did more structured fartlek away from the track. Timed Intervals of varying ranges but 3 and 2 minutes seemingly being consistent staples. Obviously there are some differences in paces, overall volume, paces of easy runs and whatnot, and Mutai's Th. session is more of a long moderate progression run as opposed to Jones's timed fartlek. Perhaps Jones was closer to what we see as "modern training". Again, I don't know the paces, but is it possible that on days such as his 1 minute fartlek reps, that this is similar to Mr. Canova keeping fast 400s in the Mosop's training mix?
Perhaps the methods have not really changed as much over time and I am comparing without having a huge sampling of older marathon runner's trianing (just guys like Deek, Lopes, Clarke).
If anyone has more info they can add or thoughts, please by all means I'd love to find out more just for general info and learning.
