Just curious: what is a respectable time for a 17 year old female soccer player to run 400 meters in at the end of a soccer conditioning work out, this being the first time ever to run a timed 400?

48.7 is the American record. That's the standard to live up to.
Sigh.....thanks, jerk.

ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. next time don't start with stupidity.
under 70? honestly I have no idea, but if she can run under 70 on no training she could probably go under 2:20 in the 8 with some specific work.
Ran a 1:05 two days in a row at the end of each practice. I'm not sure why my original question was considered stupid. The only running done previous to this has been easy 5 milers for cross training.

It's stupid because it's so ridiculously general that there is not a single feasible answer that anyone could definitively say would be applicable to this girl.
And the "stupid" quip was aimed more at your insult than anything.

2:20? 2:20 would get you to state in most cases. That would be more than "some specific work." The male version of this would be "60... probably under 2 for the 800 with some specific work."

With that I would say she's capable of probably 60 if she switched to track, but this may be a longshot too. Kind of hard to know without know how much running she's doing for soccer. Even though you say she doesn't do any besides a few 5 mile runs, soccer games can contain a lot of sprinting. I had a friend in high school who ran 23.x for 200m in trainers after soccer practice one day. I told him he was in the wrong sport. He didn't care and just thought it meant sprinters were puzzies.
define "respectable" if you want an actual answer... otherwise, this thread is (as usual) pretty pointless.
70 seconds

If she ran a 65 and is a typical soccer athlete then she should definitely be under 2:20 at the end of a season of track with proper training. If a male ran a 55 his first time out then he should be able to run under 2 after a few months of training as well. Keep in mind that their 400 speed will likely be 2-3 seconds faster once they become familiar with the event, pacing, etc.
