It appears that USATF is only planning to select three men and three women to the World Championship team in the marathon. Five athletes from each nation are allowed to compete and the US has sent five in past years. Any ideas why we would only send three this year?
The World Marathon Cup has been discontinued so there's no need to enter enough guys just to get a team score. USATF wants to send only the people who have a good shot at doing well. Out of 51 finishers last year, our 4 and 5 runners finished 41st and 45th.
But it still doesn't make sense to make a hard limit at three. They should say that they're going to select three but if a fourth or fifth get under a certain higher standard then they'll consider them.
This is ridiculous. Sending only 3 when 5 are allowed is bad for the sport. How can USATF possibly justify it? Imagine the outcry if in the 100 they decided to only enter 2. Come on USATF.
Were the 4 and 5 runners amongst the top 3 selected?
And with most IAAF events there is very little if any cost to USATF. IAAF covers expenses and travel, we cover uniforms. Seems like a no brainer.

Why are you retarded?! Besides, doesn't the OP link state that the time has to be from October 2012, not from the trials which was back in January 2012?! Most of those guys are discounted! Try again. October 2012 Anyone at the trials does NOT count. So Rizzo and Cabada are not in the mix unless they run a spring marathon.

Cabada dropped out of a marathon this weekend after a lot of pre-race hype. NYC being cancelled cut the list down a good bit. Hopefully there's a solid 5-10 guys who run well at Boston.
Cabada dropped out of Houston after being sick earlier in the week. Too bad, I think that he was pretty fit. Hopefully he'll come back and run well at Boston.
