2010 world junior silver medallist and Penn State senior Casimir Loxsom, who had a subpar junior year last year as he struggled with iron issues, sent a statement out today at the Nittany Lion Challenge as he opened up his individual 2013 campaign with a stellar 1:46.98 clocking at Penn State. Loxsom's previous indoor pr was a 1:47.46 that he ran in 2011, when he'd go on to run 1:45.31 outdoors in placing 5th at NCAAs.
The 1:46.98 clocking is the fastest time by a collegian indoors on a 200 meter track in at least 3 years. No collegian ran that fast on a 200 meter track in 2012, 2011 or 2010, and that's as far back as we can find stats.
Even on oversized tracks, the 1:46.98 mark has only been bettered twice in the last three years. Minnesota's Harun Abda ran 1:46.97 last year and Andrew Wheating ran 1:46.36 in 2010.
Section 2 - Men's 800 - 2013 Nittany Lion Challenge
1 Loxsom, Casimir SR P S U 1:46.98P
2 Kidder, Brannon FR P S U 1:48.17M
3 Dawson, Owen U N A 1:50.87
-- Fuller, Kevin U N A DNF
-- Negley, Samuel JR Pittsburgh DNF
If you know the last time a collegiate athlete ran faster than 1:46.98 on a 200 meter track (the NCAA allows oversized tracks to be used), please post it on this thread as we can't find the 2009 or 2009 NCAA POP lists.
Live meet results (the meet is still going on) can be found here: http://www.gopsusports.com/livestats/c-track/nlcchallenge13/

So basically 1:47.
-
Elias Koech from UTEP ran 1:46.77 in 2008 at the Iowa State Classic meet. It was the leading time indoors for the 800m in the NCAA during 2008.
-
Fastest D1 indoors time last year (2012) was 1:46.97.
-
That is pretty darn impressive for an opening race.

why not?. wrote:

Does any 2:59 runners say they are a a 3 hr marathoner
1:46.98 - good running -
Impressive performance and a nice run by the freshman Kidder.

I guess you didn't get my point. We're talking about legitimate tracks. The IAAF doesn't recognize oversized tracks and NCAAs will hopefully never be held on one.
Oversized tracks are basically an admission by track programs that they are less important than a football practice facility.
We're looking for 200 or 200 banked tracks. -

Ratification issues notwithstanding, that's a pretty narrow view. I'd imagine many college distance runners (myself included) would jump at the opportunity to have a 300ish meter training facility for indoors...gentler turns, easier on the hips. Regardless of why the school builds a bigger facility (football probably pays a huge part, yes), the fact that YOU, as a fan trying to make comparisons, don't like them, doesn't mean that plenty of athletes wouldn't. -
Penn State's mid-d crew is pretty incredible. Even more incredible to me is what they do with freshman in mid-January every year. Those guys are ready to rock and roll.
This year - 2012: Brandon Kidder a kid with a 1:51.09 pb runs Kidder, opens at 1:48.17. So Sick.Sdmittedly, he was a 4:03 miler in HS. Za'Von Watkins 2:22.02 in the 1k.
2011: Robby Creese, a kid with a 1:54.00 HS pb, runs ab collegiate and American junior record of 2:19.53 in the 1k. So so sick. Wade Endress 2:24.73
2010: Loxsom runs 1:16.92 for 600.
2008: Borchers as a frosh runs 2:22.42
Yes, most of those guys were studs in HS, but some of that stuff was a huge surprise like Kidder and Creese. -
Already peaked, just like every other year.

Why does 200m matter? Penn States track is one of the fastest in the world. It was modeled after the same track that Geb ran 3:31 on. -
Get back to me when he does it when it matters.
-
Two guys ran faster in'06 at the Big 12 meet.
-
The banked 200 and the flat oversized tracks have the same adjustment times. The comment about oversized tracks indicating that the school spends on (football) but not track is possibly the dumbest one of the day, week, 2013, ....
-
I get that .5 seconds is a lot in the 800, but I consider Ben Scheetz running1:47 his senior year as a DIII runner to be more impressive. However, hopefully Cas will maintain and improve and show up at nationals.
-
Cant wait to see what they run come outdoors when half the guys flame out.
-
Another excellent rabbit job by Kevin Fuller. Kid has paced from redic times for Penn Staters.

This.
He beat his own facility record by a scant 0.38s which he set 2 years ago.
He won't be around when it counts. He never is. -
Pistol wavin new haven is what got him started
