How would those of you who have coached handle a small high school cross team where the ability levels of the runners are widely varied? There are only a couple guys who are fairly good, and the rest are at various stages of not-in-shape. Should the better runners be allowed to run virtually separate from the team every day while the remainder try to get into racing shape? I don't want to sacrifice quality training for anyone, but I also don't want division among teammates, esp. since the team is very small. Also the guys are mostly young and out for fun more than having big running ambitions. Only one is hoping to run in college.
