It keeps the torso from pitching forward so you don't fall over.
the back muscle? like one single muscle in my back? wowzers....
the general area, i would assume people that read the post know what im talking about
It's less important than the leg muscle.
got to be the POD^ thanks for sharing!
it moves it concert with the opposite hip extensor. Muscles do not work in isolation. Generally the "back muscles" stabilize during running.
Are we talking about back muscle speed or back muscle turnover? It makes a difference.

When referring to the role that back muscles play in running, it is referred to as velocity. Similar to foot speed velocity. Same concept.
I could be wrong, but aren't the hamstring muscles sort of part of your back muscles? If yes, then I'd say that the back muscles are part of the muscles what move your legs. Pretty important role.

Hamstrings are part of the back-of-the-leg muscles. Other than that No, they are not part of your back.
They keep you up right. most runners have fairly weak muscles on there "back" sides. It's because all the motion you do is forward. But stronger back muscles will keep you more upright. The more upright and chest open you run the more economical your running will be.
Crucial in maintaining speed at the end of the race for the kick, as it stabilizes the torso to allow for fully integrated movement when your form will otherwise tend to crumble. The lats are way more important than the arm muscles for power at the finish.
Posterior Kinetic Chain, yo! Glute Max and Erector Spinae share fibers.
Your "back muscle" is part of your Core (just in case anyone thought that doing "core" just meant sit-ups, it doesn't) and is just as important as your abs in maintaining posture. Preventing that late race kyphosis of the truly spent runner (or the lordosis of the poor soul trying to "swim" his way to the finish line) is reason enough to do some back extensions. Among other things.
I believe it's an all or nothing thing, especially for infant runners. In other words, "Baby's Got Back" or she does not.

I slouch corrected.
Further clarification: Does it make a difference if you have a fastback or a hatchback?
only important if you are running backwards
