I'm in the middle of a marathon training cycle and a few weeks ago I started to feel some dull pain in my left knee so I switched from almost exclusively training on the roads (6 road runs and 1 trail run per week) to exclusively soft surface running. It's a little crazy, but I'm currently doing all of my mileage on a 1 mile park loop that is all grass. Besides the tedium and sometimes boredom of going round and round, I've noticed my legs feeling great even after long runs and workouts and the pain in my knee has subsided considerably.
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in doing all of their training on soft surfaces going into a marathon? Should I try to get a few key workouts on the roads to keep the "feel" in my feet? Does it matter? Honestly, I'd much rather continue to log all of the miles from here until the race on the grass but I have no experience with how that'll translate to the marathon. I'm shooting for a sub 3:00 in mid-February.
Any opinions or thoughts are greatly appreciated.
