Short version - how to train 5k in a way that leaves you able to break 3 in marathon?
current pr/fitness 17:25, 37:40 (6 mi tempo + fast final lap - probably low 37 shape), and last year did first/only half in 1:24:30. I'm faster at all distances than last year and my mileage has been higher for longer than last year. Expect I'm 1:23 shape.
my training has been something like:
short tempo ~20 min (abt 6:00/mi)
longish hills (10+)
easy (8-10)
long tempo 5-6 mi (abt 6:08/mi)
longish hills (10+)
easy (8-10)
short tempo ~20 min
longish hills (10+)
easy (8-10)
1000s/800s working up to 6x1000 at 5:30 pace
longish hilly (10+)
easy (8-10)
been adding 5 min or so to long hilly run (at moderate- not easy pace) every time. Longest is 13+ mi.
my 5k is gradually coming down. 18 - 17:40 - 17:25 over a couple of months.
want to take a crack at breaking 17 and I think I need 6 weeks to have a chance, while simultaneously prepping for a 3 hr marathon at end of Feb. I need cold weather to race well, and this will likely be my last season of competitive running. I want to give myself the best chance to bag my goal times before I move on.
How would you adapt my 5k training to give me best possible shot at sub 17, while still getting me prepared to race sub 3 marathon?
