The statute of limitations on this sort of thing ought to be about a week. People such as Marion Jones and Lance Armstrong (to name just a couple) shouldn't be stripped of their medals/titles YEARS after the fact. If the drug testers are too incompetant to nail the cheats immediately then it's on the governing bodies, not the athletes.
The above is just my opinion. Now I'm asking for fact: How long did it take them to nail Ben Johnson? Seems to me it was almost immediate, perhaps even while the Oly Games were still in progress? If memory serves, Floyd Landis was caught fairly quickly as well.

Yes. The medal should be made of gold if they say it's gold. Otherwise they should say "gold-plated medal."
Right now nobody cares if they get first or second, because they're both a silver medal. Otherwise Rupp would have tried harder to beat Farah.
In the Diamond League, if you win, you get real diamonds. A gold medal should be made of gold. Right now the DL prize is better than the Olympic prize. Of course, the Olympics has been a scam ripping off athletes since day 1, with all its hypocrisy about amateurism.

They will ask for it back, but they cannot really come and take it from you. If you were doping like a damned dog from hell, you'll likely get busted at some point so you might quickly pawn the medal or something...
They do. The national Olympic committee is supposed to get the medal back from the disqualified athlete and send it to the IOC. I remember somebody - Nick Willis maybe? - talking about how the medal they finally got looked used.
In his recent Competitor Radio interview Tyler Hamilton talked about giving back his Olympic medal to the national federation. If I recall correctly, he gave it back after confessing to USADA, but before the federation officially stripped him of the title and asked for the medal back.
So if they won't give it back, or if they lost or sold it or whatever, do they have to pay for it?
On a side note there was a special on Olympic medals on the news a few weeks ago. The gold medal is 90 percent silver and is worth about 600 dollars. The silver medal is worth about 300 dollars and the bronze is worth less than 5 dollars and is mostly brass.

Cost of the London games was about $15 billion. $6 million = 0.4%.
