It sounds like the rock was thrown from the overpass, which is really messed up if true. Luckily Grabill and Brewer are going to be ok, but it could have been much worse.

OSP Asks Public's Help in Investigation After Rock Tossed From I-5 Overpass Near Rice Hill Injures Driver (Photos) - 11/27/12
Oregon State Police troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office are asking for the public's help to identify the person(s) responsible for throwing a rock from an Interstate 5 overpass just south of Rice Hill Monday night. The rock went through a vehicle's windshield, hitting the female driver in the face causing non-life threatening injuries.
On November 26, 2012 at 10:40 p.m., a 1997 Subaru Legacy station wagon driven by MOLLY GRABILL, age 20, from Poway, California, was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 146 approaching the Isadore Road overpass. A rock larger than a baseball came down from the overpass, smashing through the driver's side windshield and hit GRABILL in the face.
The car's passenger, CHRIS BREWER, age and residence not available, grabbed the steering wheel to control the vehicle. He was unable to keep it under control as the vehicle traveled onto the shoulder and rolled on the freeway coming to rest facing the opposite direction.
GRABILL was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield for treatment of facial injuries. BREWER was also transported and he was treated and released for injuries sustained in the traffic crash. GRABILL is reported in good condition this morning. Both are University of Oregon students.
Anyone with information about persons or vehicles near the mentioned location around the time of this incident is asked to call OSP Detective Tom Willis at (541) 440-3334 or the OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at (541) 440-3333.

Crazy stuff. A rock "larger than a baseball" hit their car.
Meth does crazy stuff to the residents of Eugene. Sad - my grandparents went to school there.
I think that rock was MUCH larger than a baseball. A slightly-larger-than-a-baseball sized rock wouldn't smash up the entire car like that.

The article says the car also rolled after Grabill was hit and Brewer attempted (unsuccessfully) to grab the wheel and get it under control. The rolling of the car could explain why the entire car looks smashed.
Still a crazy story though. It sounds like they're both gonna be alright...could've been much worse.

Meth also does crazy stuff to residents of any city. Turns out that their car was hit about 25 miles outside of Roseburg which really is culturally separated from Eugene (which was about 50 miles away).
Sadly, this kind of shit happens way too often. This should be treated as attempted murder.
Are we sure it wasn't a meteorite?

I don't always agree with Malmo, but I absolutely second this.

I agree this should be an attempted murder case.
Years ago in Chester, PA a teenager threw a chunk of ice that was so large two hands were required to throw it off of a bridge. It came down on a car and crushed / stabbed the passenger in the chest to death. The boy's family tried to argue "Oh he was just a kid pulling pranks." I don't remember the penalty, but it probably wasn't enough.
Same thing on an overpass on I-80 near Auburn, CA a couple years back. A couple of young HS football playing thugs. Unfortunately, they did a lot of permanent damage to the poor victim down there. I'd bet you it was a couple of "tough guy" football types in Oregon as well. If you can get through the paywall by answering their stupid questions, you will be sickened by that story.

As do I. The action shows a disregard for life, and an attempt to destroy it. I hope the entire university makes it a priority to find the culprits and bring the to justice.

Thank you for posting the story. I hope they will recover completely, and that the perpetrators will be caught.
Chris is a really nice kid. Really glad he's alright. Pretty smooth attempt to grab the wheel, from the sound of it.
I'm glad they're both ok, and I hope they catch who did it.
