How does the Van Cortland Park course compare to the Wake Med course in NC the NXN Southeast course is held on.
I understand Van Cortland is somewhat tougher but is it 10 secs tougher, 20 seconds, what?
Worth low to mid 160ish speed rating using the Tullyrunners page, depending on race conditions. Amber Trotter has the highest speed rating ever with a 180, Aisling Cuffe hit 170 I believe. Each point equates to roughly 3 seconds.

It's #7 all-time at VCP for h.s. girls and the best since 1994.
Sarah Baxter's Mt. SAC race was a 164 speed rating, but I think that was a little low.
Last year Cain ran 17:40 at Bowdoin which is #3 all time behind Aisling Cuffe (17:16 CR) and Nicole Blood. Wonder if she'll be able to take down Cuffe's record next weekend. That would definitely solidify her as a legitimate XC runner and title threat.
Reading from the most recent ratings of a 5k at VCP (AIS & PSAL Champs), 17:26 equates to a 157 speed rating. So nothing too astonishing. Baxter's Mt. Sac TR (164) puts her roughly 20 seconds ahead of Mary.

I actually forgot about that since it was also run at the NYRR XC Champs and not FLNE...so push Cain back 1 spot on the all-time list. Thanks for the reminder.
I'm not terribly impressed by this. She's a top-12 XC runner, like last year. This is what I'd expect.

Speed ratings are relative, they cannot by definition be high or low.

As a freshman she beat Aisling Cuffe (then a senior) by nearly 2 seconds in the 1500 (4:17.84 vs 4.19.83 in the NY State Championships). As far as I can tell, that's still Cuffe's PR. Cain came down to 4:11.01 as a sophomore.October 13 she ran 14:03 for 2.5 miles at Van Cortland (Manhattan Invitational) about 30 seconds faster than when she ran the same course in 2011 (she had help this year from fast competition). That time is almost exactly the same mph as 17:26 for 5k. I would say the 17:26 represents a noticeably superior effort. At least Salazar's coaching hasn't done any harm yet.It's an interesting question as to when and at what level any runner will meet her limit. Evidently she wants to find it now, knowing that there's no guarantee she'll be a world beater. But it takes some resolve and courage to make this leap out of her comfort level.

She is head and shoulders above all hs girls talent wise. Whether that dominance extends to xc or how serious she is about xc is unknown. She may be just cooling her heels and trying out Salazars tactics, waiting for spring.

All of that is correct. And she's a top-12 XC runner, like last year.
If there is anything a quality 800 runner in high school dislikes, it is a "tough" cross-country course, which works against all her strengths. The best measure is any previous performances at VCP by her.

If I remember correctly, I believe the girls high school record for VCP is in the 16:40's...now that is fast.
