How might one practice water jumps and hurdles without access to the real thing? Any creative ideas?

Do you have access to regular hurdles? We used those in college even though we had a pit and barriers. It was much safer if you accidentally hit the hurdle. If you can find a fence or something to jump over, that is an okay substitute too. My team never practiced the water pit on a regular basis. My coach (Olympic steeplechaser) said it was the easiest of the barriers to jump b/c you can step on it. Just be familiar with it before the race. Sit in the L7 position too, that will train you to keep good form during the race.

Sorry for my ignorance, but are you not allowed to step on the other barriers on the track. Also, how high are the barriers?
if you want to practice the water jump, without actually doing it, put a barrier in front of a sandpit, great practice!
If you don't have a barier, you can build one very easily, or put something else in front u can jump off of; or just learn to hurdle it.
Athlete's are allowed to step on the barriers however it would slow them down considerably so it's best for them to hurdle the dry barriers. As for barrier height, the men's steeple is measured at 36in. while the women's is 30in. There are 4 dry barriers and 1 water pit (12 ft. long) per lap. Here is some more info on the origins of, in my opinion, the best race in Track and Field:
Anyone looking to run a fast and respectable time will most likely be hurdling the barriers on the track. I think that the best way to train is to do you speed work with hurdles on the track. putting one at the beginning and end of each straightaway is a good way to get some hurdle practice in. You can even put them in lane 2 and do every other lap with hurdles or whatever you think best suites you. doing one interval with them and then another without them or some combination like that can be good for training as well. Anyways that is just one coaches view.
