Oops. Looks like Martin Lel is going to interrupt the previously scheduled Gebreselassie cakewalk.
No excuses from anyone about running slow there. I'd say it is not unreasonable to expect them all to run PBs, especially when I heard that Vail was looking to run fast in NYC. NYC is downright mountainous compared to FUK (airport code - damn cool).
I've never trained for a marathon, so maybe someone could give me some insight here. How will racing about 1 month after when they initially expected to affect them? Would the go back back to close to their peak milage and try to "re-taper"?

From a physiological standpoint there will be minimal performance decrements...but dependent on how long of a taper they initially took. With a 1 month "extension" they should have added another 2 hard weeks and begun a 2 week taper.
Tapers last anywhere between 4-28 days as we know from laboratory assessments. IF and I doubt it, but if anybody did a 4 week taper for NY then they will show the most decremented performance but I'd likely wager a 2-3% at most.

Bairu will move through the field late in the race to finish in the top 5 in 2:11. Mattai for the win eh in 2:06:53. Geb: 2:08 for 3rd.

With Chicago, Boston, and New York why would they travel half way around the world? If they did, some other jackass like you would criticize them for avoiding the world class fields. You're making something out of nothing.
