to what end? People ramble on about wasted tax money. This is a huge waste of money. Going after end users of an extremely benign drug? Making growing it in your backyard illegal, even though ditchweed is found across the midwest?

Unfortunately I have to say that is an awful article. It nowhere details any federal action. It states a lot of people were arrested but I believe most of those are probably state arrests (especially for possession).
Obama has been disappointing on the marijuana front but this article doesn't document that in any way shape or form.

Prosecuted* and thats bullshit...there are counties where its illegal for more than 2 unrelated people to live together, but do you want your tax dollars spent enforcing these laws?
there are a ton of antiquated laws on the books and while I agree that the law should be enforced, resources are not unlimited and right now the, in your words, persecution of marijuana users is an extremely inefficient and wasteful use of resources

Not one of you has mentioned the Corporate/Private Prisons lobby. They are vehemently for keeping marijuana illegal.

speed limits keep you safe. Exceeding them kills people
How does smoking weed hurt people?
How does enforcing marijuana laws improve quality of lives?
Enforcing the speed limit is a very good thing - it slows people down, who might otherwise kill somebody. I fail to see how this has anything to do with mj laws.
They should be executed within 3 days of arrest.

If we have enough cops that they have no more serious crimes to prosecute...hire less cops and give their salaries back to the tax payer
I don't know how Obama finds time to do anything else after arresting 850,000 people for weed.
Good thing he is a dictator and can change all of the laws whenever he wants. He can save himself some time by not arresting all those people.

Or maybe they could just stop smoking pot. What is the big deal? Why do so many people act like they HAVE to smoke pot? Sounds to me like there are 850,000 idiots out there complaining about breaking a major, common law that they knew existed.

The deal is because the things I like to do aren't illegal and haven't been shown to be a burden on our society. I really don't understand your question. My activities are legal, pot is not.

It's my decision because it makes sense. Regardless of whether or not the pot law is right or wrong, it exists. Those 850,000 knew beforehand that pot leads to jail time and they still decided to do it. And now you and them want to complain about it as if you had no choice but to smoke pot because it is required for life (which is not). My point is, why can't you just not smoke it? Are you maybe perhaps addicted to it? If you know it's illegal and you still do it, then that is COMPLETELY your fault.
The laws have an obvious purpose (to keep people from smoking pot) so what are you talking about?
Just because it might be less harmful (which might or might not be true), does not mean that we should legalize it. That logic doesn't make sense. Based on that premise, the logical thing would be to delegalize alcohol, not legalize pot.
I've briefly read up on the subject (very briefly) and read that marijuana is involved in over 10% of fatal car accidents in some states. I've also read that the tax revenue to regulatory spending ratio of alcohol is like 12:1. Pot has also been shown to trigger or exacerbate latent mental issues. These findings are not in favor of pot.
And the too many people in jail argument that is thrown around is dumb. No one is putting all those people in jail except for themselves. They knew the law and punishments existed. If you want to smoke pot, lobby for it, get it legalized and THEN smoke it. Until then, it's your own fault if you end up in jail.
