This decision should have been made on Wednesday. Does anyone else think that the delay was purposeful. If you cancel on Friday you still get the tourist dollars but do not need to put on the race. This will one day become a business school case study.

I believe the delay was sincere. They made a valiant attempt but the opposition to the event by local elected officials and media people possibly was generating anger from the residents and may have put the runners in danger of injury on Sunday. Nobody can be certain if there would have been injuries but it was possible.
We are in a time where the favorite sport is media lynchings. The facts mean little when a few can persuade the profit driven media to sensationalize stories so much it becomes too big of an issue for anybody else worried about losing a few dollars who cave in under the pressure.
As for the marathon, hundreds of small events that nobody worries about will go on as usual throughout the city and nobody will think anything of it. They were on the nba game spouting all that garbage about how strong a city they are and they are going to restart construction on the world trade center TONIGHT. Like it or not, the majority of the people just hate these marathons because it inconveniences them for a few minutes of their precious time. They are feeling great right now getting the city to bend over backwards for them.
I agree. I have no personal interest or stake in the NY Marathon in anyway. But it was strikingly inept the way they handled that. People from all across the country, even the world, are looking to make plans to come to NY and run. Just make a call at least by Wednesday and if there is any doubt at all just cancel it. I think they should have canceled even before the storm. I think multiple experts had been predicting the kind of damage that actually happened.

Well said and you are completely right. This became a sensationalized story. They reassured people no resources would be taken from the storm victims but the story already picked up speed and was not going to go away.
And it is okay for the NFL game to go on which is ridiculous. This requires a lot of people as well including police etc. Beyond ridiculous.
You are correct. I'm staying at a big hotel in mid-town; there are 400 runners from France alone here, not to mention all the Italians and Dutch. EVERYONE thinks this race should have been cancelled on Wednesday. This is complete B.S.
ummm, but an NFL game has LIMITED breath, is confined to one location, and the traffic nightmare associated with it is no way comparable to the efforts that would have to be taken to managed and block off 26 miles of roadway and sidestreets. And does NYPD even work those games if they are held in jew jersey?
Get over it. I have trouble mustering sympathy for the runners here (except the elites) People lost a lot more. You look whiny and petty.
This isn't your livelihood. It's a hobby for the most part enjoy you time in NYC instead of complaining.

it no longer matters who is right or wrong, the citizens of NYC have spoken and most are really really pissed about the marathon even being considered!.....marathoners should feel lucky they cancelled it....the people of NYC are a lot things...but they are not afraid to start a fight! People would of got hurt.....mostly runners and marathoners....this could of got real ugly!!!!!!!... It's over...go home.

The right call was cancelling the race. I do agree that the timing is a bit suspect as noted by the OP.

The Right Thing would have been to let the race go as planned. There is NO WAY Mary W. or anyone else could have predicted that New Yorkers wanted to gang up to beat the sh1t out of skinny and almost naked runners.
Know your average NY-thug. These people belong at the bottom of the sewer. Thanks to Sandy some of them are there now. Enjoy their misery as they now enjoy the misery of marathon runners.
