Wind's blowing 60mph right now, and strengthening--expecting gusts up to 80. Lights just browned out again--juice should go sometime before midnight, I'm guessing.

I'm telling ya. I'm directly in the path of the eye, and the winds have died down considerably from what they were late in the afternoon. The last map at weather.com still had 70 mph winds predicted into Tuesday am, but this storm isn't behaving like the typical hurricane, and that prediction is just flat out wrong. The rain has stopped, too, and it's just like any other windy day now.

if you have power and have not had flooding you're lucky

I'm using the term eye loosely. I live inland far enough that I've never experienced a well formed eye. The eyes tend to collapse well before they make it to me. But I've experienced having hurricane centers pass by along with tornados, lightning, high winds, downed trees, 10" rain, etc. Sandy threw none of that my way. She probably did dump 5-6" of rain, but that's not too unusual.

Power's still on and I don't expect to see a hurricane-worthy amount of destruction on my commute tomorrow morning.

So, how far of a commute do you have up there in Bangor, Maine?

That's what always happens with hurricanes north of the Carolinas. They raise up a bunch of hype about high winds and death and in the end it just rains a lot. Expensive flooding, but not the end of the world.

Sandy hasn't even landed yet, and when she does it'll be in South Jersey.

She sped up to around 30 mph when she strengthened to 90 mph winds and ended up coming ashore early around 6:00.

Even the gusts are infrequent now. She's done.

I wish the best to those in the path of the storm, and as someone who lives in New Orleans I can tell you no hurricane is alike. Some are mostly wind, some mostly rain, and some seem like nothing worse than a bad summer shower. You should always take them seriously though because you don't know how the storm will unfold. I honestly thought Sandy was going to be really bad when I saw the millibars were Cat 4 strength even though it was only a 1. Isaac had Cat 3 pressure but was a 1, yet it did a ton more than 1's usually do.

I'm sorry to feed your trolling, but the forecast has been pretty spot on so far-- very bad storm surge, and very widespread high (tropical storm force). That is why this storm is so bad, not high intensity.

There are around 3 million people without power so far due to the large area that has been affected so far and that is only going to go up. The NYSE has been flooded which seems a good reason to close it even if the weather is nice tomorrow.

I agree that the forecasters did a good job right up until the point that the storm came ashore. Then poof it was over. They did a lousy job of predicting the damaging effects, which were devastating for those who live within a few miles of the shore or a back bay, and negligible if you live anywhere else.
