It seems to me that Carrie Tollefson and the others would have met the A standard if the temperatures in the Olympic Trials had been, say, 70 degrees rather than upper 90's. What's with forcing our distance athlete's to qualify in upper 90 degree heat... mid-day sun in Sacremento? Runyan dnf's and Hamilton dns's and the winner will stay home unless she reruns her race and meets an arbitrary time in a cooler climate. If Sacremento, then schedule the finals in the cool mornings or late evening, but not in the hot mid-day sun. Preferably, don't risk it. Schedule the races at a cooler location.
Probably, if the temp was decent, SFH would have raced, Marla would have finished, and who knows how the race would have turned out? But the top three would be going to Athens, and they could spend the next month sharpening, rather than wondering if their ticket is punched.
Sure, all the athletes "know the rules", but that doesn't mean that we have to burden them with extra races.
