What are some of the statistics as to who won the bonus each year? If I recall they did something similar at the 15K nationals and women win it every year.
Also, how do they determine the time between starts?
Unless the head start is something crazy like 8 minutes the men's champion will win the bonus. The men's field is stronger (comparatively) than the women's, and with Trafeh and Abdi running that guarantees a fast early pace. If Kara is going to have any shot to hold them off she's going to have to go solo from the gun rather than running with the leaders.
I thought I read it was around 6-7 min and abdi won it last year.
That's a pretty nice $22K payday for the winner. Someone could make a pretty nice career running all of the USA Championship road races. Pays way better than track in the Us that's for sure.

Oh, sure, men are "biologically predispositioned" to do better on average. But that's the thing. It's only ON AVERAGE.
What if the women's winner had two Olympic distance runners for parents, but the men's winner had two weak cripples for parents and had cerebral palsy? Wouldn't HE be at the genetic disadvantage, and therefore deserving the head start?

btw, I think the "equalizer" bonus should be divided by 2 and split between the mens and womens champions. They are not racing each other. There is a mens race and a womens race, not 2 races. Barring that, the women should get a head start of the difference between the womens wr and mens wr or 10%, whichever is lower. In this case it should be 4:26.
