I recently watched a youtube clip from 1980 of Steve Ovett's gold-medal winning 800m performance in Moscow. It was the most "physical" race I'd ever seen in that he twice blatantly shoved competitors - the second shove was on lap 2 to force his way out of a box, and the first done early in the race, well I'm not really sure why he shoved the German guy.
Anyway, what is the rule on this? When I ran middle distance in HS, I had a signficant upper body strength advantage on my usually skinny middle-distance opponents. Now this only came into play occasionally - like on starts, I remember once elbowing a guy so hard he fell down and took down the next guy too like a domino (this was actually not intentional but instinctive) and a few other times my elbows forestalled someone trying to catch me with 150 or so to go (both intentional and instinctive occurrences). I never got DQ'd but then I don't think I ever blatantly shoved people around the way Ovett did.
What is the rule on Ovett's style of running? When is it okay to push an opponent and when will it get you DQ'd? And are elbows always okay or can one get DQ'd for that too if it is too obviously intentional?
