Max ran 7:57:14 to win (7:37/mile pace on what was supposedly a pretty tough course in the Virginia mountains, mixing technical trails with rolling mountain roads), taking home $5000. Sage took second in 8:12:05, to win $2000. For comparison, Geoff Roes won in a very distant 8:58 last year. Notable other athletes that these two destroyed include Dave Mackey, Ian Sharman, Nick Clark, Dominic Grossman, and David Riddle.
On the women's side, WS100 record holder/Comrades runner up Ellie Greenwood is destroying the extremely weak field.

If you lined up their personal best over the marathon, the two fastest marathoners won the race.
-
Absolutely true. I'm not sure how the women's field lines up. Ellie sports a 2:42, but 2nd is some random Ethiopian that I can't find any results for. Perhaps she got into the "elite" field based on some marathon time that I can't find?
-
Not the same course as last year. And Riddle dropped with a stomach issue...wasn't "destroyed" by anyone. Nonetheless, great performances. Huge for King moving up in distance.
-
Have you ever run longer than a marathon? Stomach issues occur in such long runs when you push yourself past what you're capable of. Riddle couldn't hang. Sure, the course might not be identical, but it's quite similar overall. King >>>>>>>>> Roes.
-
Interesting. Didn't those two guys attend the same university? Were they actual teammates, or from different "eras"?
-
Yes. Riddle was puking at mile 18. King certainly > Roes on a runner's course like UROC, but not by an hour.
-
Honestly, King > Roes on any course 100k or shorter. I guess we don't know what would happen in 100 miles since Max has never done it, but I'm willing to bet that he'd kill it just due to the toughness factor he has.
-
So who was saying that Max was going to face some real competition here? The guy won by 15 minutes and he raced a 50k and a half marathon back to back the weekend before.
-
Don't forget that Kilian is superior to Roes and King was very close to Kilian at Speedgoat this year, despite Kilian cutting the course and King having absolutely no altitude training. With that in mind, even on tough technical terrain, King > Roes.
-
Probably true except for a very rugged course where Roes could have an advantage (when healthy). I hope King moves up to 100 miles when ready.
-
Where has King run very technical terrain? (Honest question) Speedgoat is all smooth single track.
-
Max is THE KING!
-
Matt Carpenter is like 50 and he still would kick Killian's butt and Max King's butt!
-
You guys are idiots. Riddle had the best build-up of his life, but freaking Max King and Sage Canaday are on another level. Those fools can click off 5:20 miles in a 100km without fear of crashing. Riddle made the wrong move to follow.
Mike Wardian destroyed Roes last year, FYI. -

Is this a joke? -
Speaking of Wardian... any word on why he didn't run? He was registered.

Clearly you're not familiar with Speedgoat.

Aw man, I was thinking of going to that race. If I'd known it'd be that competitive, I definitely would've gone.
-
Is what a joke? Speedgoat has tons of vertical but all smooth compared to real technical mountain courses. And even there Max wasn't any faster than Tony on the steep downs. I don't know much about Max's history in the very technical (e.g. European) races. He's fun to watch now though.
