Max King is a stud. I do agree that generally the competition in trail races is weaker. Our system of running here tends to track fast folks to cross, track, and the roads. But anyone who thinks Max King is some cherry-picking wannabe, forgets that this is a fellow with some strong efforts in ALL of these disciplines.
While he has carved out a niche in the trail-running scene, he does not define himself exclusively by it. He has great range, running cross, track, and road events at an elite level at a huge range of distances. More importantly, he does his talking with his legs which I respect a great great deal.
So, Max is indeed a beast. Before you hate, you should drive up to Oregon and challenge him to a 5k. On track, road, or trail... I don't think he would mind which.
Furthermore, he's a friendly fellow and nice to all comers. Congrats, Max!
