It's Official: Max King Is A Beast - Completes 50k/21k National Titles On Back To Back Days for 2nd Straight Year

Max King is an animal, and I in no way want to take away from how awesome he is. However, if this doesn't show that the trail/ultra scene is weak, I don't know what does. There is no way somebody should be able to run the 50k national champs and then 1 day later win a trail half marathon (by 2 minutes!). There have got to be other fast trail guys out there, step it up!

Why do some people put "it's official" before a stated opinion? It seems as if people who do this aren't that convinced of their argument, so put this as a prefix to somehow add weight to their thoughts. Not trying to be hostile - would sincerely like to know why some do it.....

They're using "It's Official" as a rhetorical device to convey their enthusiasm for what follows. It's like a pre exclamation point.

Same thing with Scott Jurek with wins at WS 100 and Badwater. I love ultrarunning and trail but it is not as deep as people think it is.

This is definitely changing. The sport has come a long way since the days of Kouros dominating every single race. Nobody will dominate WS100 like Jurek ever again. Much more parity now. Too bad Jornet isn't doing more races in the US. I think that would really force Americans to elevate their game.

You guys are such idiots. Just because Killian beat Max in europe (along with many other runners), in pikes peak, and speedgoat, i doesn't mean Killian would have beat Max in the 50k. Trail running is different everytime, depending on where you run. A smooth course with gradual climbs and not a lot of climbing would give Max the Advantage. Every runner is better at different style of courses. Max is actually one of the few that can compete in everything thats thrown at him.

Its funny how you guys can sit at home and bash the rest of trail runners in the U.S. If you think you are so fast then get out there. Shut your mouth and sign up for a race. Even better idea...how about you race Max a day after he's run a 50k and good luck beating him.

Also, look at ultra running world championships and mountain running world championships. If you haven't noticed, the U.S. has been doing pretty damn well lately. So well, that Max King didn't make the team this year. So i'm not sure where this idea of the U.S. level not being as high as Europe is coming from.

We run real races, not see-how-far-you-can-jog-in-a-week-a-thons. I bet Max King could beat me in a dance marathon too.

Max King is a stud. I do agree that generally the competition in trail races is weaker. Our system of running here tends to track fast folks to cross, track, and the roads. But anyone who thinks Max King is some cherry-picking wannabe, forgets that this is a fellow with some strong efforts in ALL of these disciplines.

While he has carved out a niche in the trail-running scene, he does not define himself exclusively by it. He has great range, running cross, track, and road events at an elite level at a huge range of distances. More importantly, he does his talking with his legs which I respect a great great deal.

So, Max is indeed a beast. Before you hate, you should drive up to Oregon and challenge him to a 5k. On track, road, or trail... I don't think he would mind which.

Furthermore, he's a friendly fellow and nice to all comers. Congrats, Max!

The guy was also 19th in the marathon trials. Crazy range over all terrain. Anyone talking smack should go race him.

I'm not talking smack on Max, I'm talking smack on the 23.4k 0g hopskotch competition. I'll race Max in an 800m if he wants to. He'd smoke me in a marathon (which is a real race).

Didn't this guy run some goofy race they do on one of those engineered oblong tracks where they hop over barriers and kiddie pools? I mean who was the guy who decided they were going to make it 7 and 1/2 laps? That's really odd.

He is good but nobody was there so I think you guys are giving way too much credit. He is not the best Trail/mountain guy in the USA as seen at US Mountain Nationals
