I'd say it's basically the same reason it annoys you when you share a dessert with someone and they eat most of it.

For the rich, it seems that to stack the deck and essentially steal money from the middle class (Wall Street Bankers, rich draining the Social Security Trust fund, people like Romney avoiding honest tax liability through the "carried interest deduction" that the rest of us don't get) is OK. But when anyone calls them on it and expects the rich to pay a fairer share, that's "class warfare."
It's supposed to be a two-way street, not the monied class getting all the exemptions and deductions, and the middle class left holding the bag. That's why people hate the rich.
BTW, I paid a higher tax rate than Mitt Romney last year.

is it really so hard to understand when we live in a culture that worships wealth, and if you are poor you are sub-human, that people who aren't in the richest .001% would be a bit ticked off at idiots like Paris Hilton (remember most wealth is inherited) or sports morons like Vince Young who blow $26,000,000 dollars in 4 years.
The rich are worshipped, not vilified. We imported a bunch of idiots who haven't quite figured this out yet, but they will. Hating the rich makes all 100% of us poorer.

They do seem oddly obsessed with this notion, however. I am not certain why that would be. Perhaps the "I am a victim" mentality that has become so popular with the masses in this country has spread to the rich as well.

I don't hate anyone who's rich based on that fact alone. I only hold contempt for the greedy, selfish ones who can't win without a stacked deck and loaded dice.

How are rich people vilified if Americans (of many political persuasion btw) believe the following:
1. Investment banks should be separated from commercial banks
2. The Fed reserve shouldn't bail any of the investment banks out when they go bankrupt.
3 Money earned from Chinese communist labor and pollution is taxed much more than money earned from an Americans hard work and skill.
