Iron Defficiency in Males???

No one can give you an answer except for your blood test results. And eat some hamburgers.

Dudes don't get a lack of iron. So sack up, drink a beer, run, eat a burger. Buy a new truck if your savings is good. If your savings is only solid, buy a small boat. If you don't have a savings, have sex with a girl at least 3 inches shorter than you.

I also I would love any suggestions about what the best Iron supplements are...should I go with liquid iron or just a iron supplement pill. I read somewhere that Iron is toxic??? Is this true??

I was thinking it may actually be Caloric defficiency instead...I do follow a healthy diet but I always eat a lot in volume. I never leave the table feeling hungry or unsatisfied.

Could be iron deficiency. Doubtful it is general caloric intake. If you eat a reasonable diet and only running up to 75 miles per week max, then it is more likely to do with your training.

Were you running anaerobic intervals all year round and racing all year round and really pushing the effort in a lot of runs?

Could be as simple as you need to go run some mileage for 8 to 12 weeks and steady paces and cut out all anaerobic training and racing workouts....

sounds like anemia to me... u should really get a blood test... I run for a Division one school and have experienced this before so I know what im talking about. You can get low in iron from a multiple number of things. Theres foot strike because of red blood cells then theres diet. Your a really skinny kid so your more vulnerable. alright so I have had problems in the past with anemia and I am currently battling it. All your symptoms sound legit.. 3 years ago I was running without even knowing I had it. I wasn't improving and was almost getting worse. I could get out fast but my legs would immediately tighten up and would get this feeling of just not being able to compete. Its a horrible feeling! Your breathing starts to feel abnormal also. Do you feel tired during the day and unmotivated to do anything? Thats a big symptom. You need to get this checked out because if you are you need to take an iron supplement and you can see huge improvements with a month or two

^^The inability to compete thing sounds about right. I am finding that I just can't stick with the people who I used to dominate last month. I also feel like I am unable to fully push myself during races....a problem I have never had before.

The anearobic training is another thing I have considered but I don't think it's the main problem. My coach for reasons unbeknownst to me has been having us run all out 200's and 400s's on track the past couple weeks.

As dumb as that training is, the fact that I have actually gotten considerably worse in the past month leads

me to believe it has to some kind of physical ailment.

and I just discovered this condition called Foot Strike Hemolysis. It is common for high mileage runners because it basically destroys the red blood cells in your feet. I know 75 isnt that much but i think it would be considered pretty high mileage for a high schooler.

The symptoms certainly sound like iron deficiency. But based on body type, you may be over trained. Regarding low ferretin-- everyone is different and you'll find that that when it comes to this topic there will be divergent opinions even in the medical community.

As will the "recovery time" if you are indeed iron deficient.

Have you been taking EPO? I've read that the drug increases your need for iron.

You need a CBC or complete blood count. This is the standard test. You also need a ferritin test which will measure the amount of iron in your blood plasma.

On eof the reasons for the ferritin test is to check whether you are having difficulty with the absorption of the iron. If you have plenty of iron in your blood but have a low red blood cell count then you might have other problems.

It's very rare for men to be low on iron. If you go in for testing then prepare to have the nurse or doctor laugh at you.

More likely you're probably overtrained or not eating enough (especially protein).

Are you in college? This is the time of year where many college runners start the burn out process. Academic stress begins to kick in & you may have missed a decent meal here & there. Your nice summer base is wearing off & is now replaced with high volume speed work.

nettles, pumpkin seeds, chelated iron (ferrous bis glycinate, taking vitamin c with iron, taking iron with meat, taking chelated iron on an empty stomach, marrow soup, pho, running on grass instead of pavement, bee pollen, ginseng, repliva (a rx iron supplement) these are all things that may help.

Just came back from my test. We shall see. I also purchased a multi vitamin and iron tablets...i hope I can salvage my season.
