As a tee shirt I saw once said.
On the front: Life without Distance Running.
On the back: I don't think so.
Kinda says it all.
Relatively inexpensive compared to other participation sports.
Do you walk to school instead of carrying a lunch?
Because any idiot can do it, and you don't have to be in great shape.
You can be in mediocre shape and still jog 20k in 120 minutes. It's easy. But the hype is that being able to jog indefinitely is a great athletic achievement.
Be a sports hero + easy = popular

You're from New Jersey, right?
because the people are able to run distance are the ones that want to run distance
Most time efficient exercise. Walk outside, run, take shower. Done.
Anything else is either less effective or takes too long.
Plus there are races everywhere...too many, they are killing each other, if you like competing.
Are you sure that it is time efficient? My workout routine goes something like, sit on letsrun for 3 hours, go run, come back and sit on letsrun for 3 hours, go to bed.
wake up, check letsrun.
Popular??? Last time I checked they televise Football, Basketball, Golf, Bowling and WNBA over distance running. I would say it's not that popular.
Distance running is the ultimate expression of personal liberty. No one cries "unfair!", no government tries to regulate you when you run. The IRS does not tax you when you run. Anyone healty can run regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic status. Distance running does not add to the national debt, it does not raise the price of oil.
Distance running = true freedom.
