Ran a 10k this past weekend and got smoked by a 13yr old, he ran 33:50 for 10k. The course is an out and back so you actually get to see the leaders, pretty impressive to see this kid towards the front with all the big boys. He does hold the national record for his age group at 3000m on the track and I would imagine this would have to be very close to the national age group record for 10k road race but they just keep under 19 records instead of specific age groups for road racing.

he looks like 16 to me.

No he doesn't.

This is extremely impressive to me. The little guy is wearing a 10+oz trainer as well :)
-
That's talent. Some legit genes or he grew up running to school every day at 7000 ft.
I hope he puts his talents to good use by training hard. -
17 then?

Very fast time. However, it might not be National Record. When my son was 13 he went 35:23 which we considered fast, but at that time there was a family in Southern California named Garritson who had a number or highly trained kids running and would run awar from him. James or Jared might have run 33 or faster at that time. I am not sure. -
I am not trying to be a jerk, but that kid will be plagued with injury by the time he is 18 and will never run a step in college.
I hope it turns out differently, but we've all seen this before. -
I am not sure if it is the record becasue some other 13 yo have run close to that; the Torres and McDougals come to mind. If this is the same kid I saw run at the USATF JO, he is extremely talented. He won the 3k in what converts to about a 9:10 2-mile and never looked stressed doing it. If this is the same kid, he has a sister that looks really good as well. He did not look overly mature; however I would say he was an inch or 2 taller than the average 13 yo and him and his sister looked like they had some training under their belts.

Let's keep perspective, this kid ran very well, but keep in mind a high school girl did this last year
-
The kid should be able to run 5k in just about 16:00. He looks like he could grow a lot in the next few years. Will be interesting to see whether he can continue to progress as a runner when he fills out.
-
could be - here is a follow-up article. I know he runs JO during the summer.

In what I think might be even more impressive, this was only the 2nd time he has run this distance.
Sorry to the guy who thinks he is 17 - try 13 year old 8th grader who is not even 5' tall. Although it sounds like he is going to grow.
I have seen him run prior to this at JO events etc, but to step up to a 10k road race is just impressive. -
He made the news:

From memory, this is not the same kid, the kid I am thinking of actually ran much faster in the 3k and was definitely over 5 feet.

Kid runs with an iPod. Joker.
-
And in training shoes too...Very fast course, ran it back in 1992

He was limping after he finished - apparently he ran a cross-country race the day before. He actually looks even younger than 13. Very impressive - but I agree - he needs to take it easy. -
Actually I looked it up. Garritson ran 33:03 at 11. Interviewed later in life he admitted to 70 miles a week and never improving much past age 12.

He needs to become Ethiopian. -
As a 14 year old Brad Hudson ran a 32:57 10K in Central Park. Not an easy course.
