I'm about to purchase some racing flats and I have no idea what to think about the weight. So what I want to know is what you guys think is a good weight for, let's say size 10 shoes.
I would like to focus more on racing flats but feel free to suggest weights for trainers too.
What distance are you racing? Long distances may require more padding. I really think that as long as the shoes are under 10 ounces it's more about how they fit. Someone might come here saying they run significantly faster in 6 ounce shoes than 8 ounce shoes but I'll be surprised.
get the ones that feel the best. The difference in weight shouldn't be a determining factor since they all weigh around the same. I like the Nike zoom xc or now called LT.
It'd be fun to see comparisons between the times of the people who run track and road events. I wonder how they compare/convert.
Yeah all depends on what the distance is.....I like Nike Zoom Streak XC/LT for track workouts and 2 mile/5K races. I like Nike Zoom Streak 3/4 for 10K to marathon races and also long tempos. Everything inbetween is Nike Pegasus and Nike Zoom Elites.
I don't have input on flats since I don't use them that often.
I try to keep my trainers under 10oz and that is size 11. I usually go with something in the 'lightweight trainer' category from my running store. Kinvara, Elixir, Precision, Pure Flow, DS trainers, Adi tempos are a few of the shoes I have run in the last couple of years. I'm pretty sure those are all under 10 oz or damn close.
Going by what the manufacturer quotes and assuming that you are a man, look for 7 oz shoes or lighter. I think the Nike Zoom Streak XC mentioned earlier is 5.5 oz. I ran my only marathon in those. I think Brooks Green Silence are 6.9 oz. Just some examples. The weight of women's shoes as quoted by the manufacturer would be less of course.
The lightest shoe I've run in is the Asics Pirahna, at 4.3 ounces. It's maybe a thin for longer distances, but I didn't have any problems up to the half marathon. Nike Streak XC is probably the ideal marathon shoe, and good enough for shorter distances.
