I was reading a training thread about Falcon and in his log he said that he ran al lot of days with Jama (consensus seemed to say Jama Aden). Just thought it was surprising to see that name pop up there and that the coach of Kaki and Driouch and Makloufi used to run with now of our great miles

Given his training company and the people he coaches I had been wondering if he was a running legend that I'd missed. Seems like he was good but not unreal. Dies anyone know the type of training his athletes do?
Surprised to see that he ran 3:38 in 1990.
He was training Abdi Bile at the time.
I didn't know Jama was racing at the time.

Jama Aden went to FDU in New Jersey. I once saw him win a XC race at Van cortland Park in the 24:20's. Very smooth runner. He was the rabbit for the 1986 US Olympic Invatational indoor mile race that used to be held at the Meadowlands.
Joe was really good friends with Abdi. That's how Joe got introduced to Jama (both are Somalian). Falcon didn't hang out much with the us distance runners of that era in Europe, as he was married, and not into all the crap that goes along with the circuit. So, he did the majority of his distance with jama, and some track work with abdi and jama. You'd hear occasionally about easy runs with John walker, but that was long past his prime. Incidentally, be careful not to confuse Jama with Ibrahim (jama's little brother), who went to school in new jersey.
Ran against Pajama myself back in the 80's ... think it was his 6th or 7th year at FDU.

Well Falcon was definitely ran quality. I know Jama did some easy,long runs with him but not sure about his intervals.
Anyone have any training schedules of Jama's athletes? Or Jama? Or more extensive Falcon schedules?
Falcon was the greatest talent I've personally watched in the United States. Even if he dominated in a weak era in the NCAA.
He never even raced one single 5000 or 10,000 where he was pushed. Those races were workouts for him. He just ran easy and turned it over in the last 200.
5-6 and 116 and could accellerate. Speed and endurance like Geb. He was impressive to watch. He just had the combo of bodytype/quickness/range that you don't normally find in this country.
He was a very intense dude and blew his achilles and had to support a family.
When Jama Aden was at George Mason, he coached West Springfield, main rival to my high school. We beat them for the XC district and region titles despite their unfair advantage.
I might be mistaken...Ibrahim might have been in Virginia? Anyway, I know Joe's coach for the year of the dream mile (Dave Denny), has been on here on occasion. I'm not sure if he still coaches at lee's summit, MO or not? Incidentally, Lees summit is where Teg went to HS.
Jama, alsp went to school in NJ...FDU as one poster stated..I believe Ibrahim, went to school in VA?? Fork Union Academy. I would see Jama, Solomon, and a few other kenyans, every day on my morning run....Like clock work 630AM I would be heading North on Teaneck road and they would be heading South....Indeed, they were all smooth runners...
West Springfield did make a huge turnaround and nearly win the state meet, but not quite, leaving them with 0 titles and 2 for us.
It amuses me that he's such a big-time coach now, because I may have been on the first team to defeat an Aden-coached group of runners. Only I can't remember if he was there for XC or just track.
Trained with Jama and Abdi in 1987. Jama could run! Staple during the xc season was long intervals on grass and 2k hill repeats broken up as 2x800 with 1x400. Plyometrics, drills, strides and bloody hard progression runs. By the way stephan Franke was there too and I believe he ran low 27's in mid 90's. Pretty crazy training add mobility and weights back in the late 80's. Not sure how many were doing that then. We raced against Falco and arkansas at a XC race but not sure how many times Jama trained with him.
Yes, the hill at Lorton was the staple Saturday morning workout for years and years.
Sometimes coach would drive us down the hill to shorten the recovery.
Coach Denny does not coach at Lee's Summit any more. He did coach Matt Tegenkamp at Lee's Summit. Coach Denny now coaches at Avila University, an NAIA school in Kansas City, MO.
