Bad HS Coach stories

One of my high school cross country head coaches was not a runner and was a smoker. She would smoke while we had practice. She gave all kinds of bad advice.

Is it the same advice you give us Flagpole?

Along with the recurring and always-enlightening "Who Are Some Runners Who Never Lived Up to Potential?" the "Bad HS Coach" threads are the most toxic, juvenile, self-absorbed, and troll-infested on this board.

This one hasn't gotten too bad yet, but the countdown is on. So please, you wretched of the Tartan, you martyrs of mileage, you exiled princes of varsity. Your coach is in effigy! Armed with the broomstick of anonymity and the precision aim that only rage provides, whack away! Whack! Whack!

Practice uniforms? Are you serious?

Here's an idea - try being respectful to your coach. Ask why he wants you to wear the uniforms. Explain why they aren't a good idea. You just sound like a couple of arrogant punks.

We asked in a respectful manner and he said it was so when we take them off for races we're lighter and faster. When he addressed the whole team he said it was to acclimate to sweating a lot, which didn't make much sense to me.

So he's trying to acclimate you to the heat. That makes sense. Lots of runners train with too much clothing on to help adjust to the heat faster. You should've given his side of the story from the beginning. Now he doesn't sound as much like an idiot.

But basketball shorts. Really? I can run with a shirt on, but the shorts are a little ridiculous. Plus we've had the entire summer to get used to the heat. It's only going to start getting colder in a month.

Wasn't that Ron Daws's thing--running in two sweat suits--to acclimate to the heat?

And didn't Ted Corbitt (sp) do some of his training in Army boots, so he'd feel lighter when racing?

Except this is cross country, and it tends to get cooler in the fall for the goal races. Kind of a dumb idea.

I love it when coaches stick up for their profession and condemn the kids that only want to raise awareness and be inspired. Some of the more recent interesting stories about the sainthood of the profession . . .

Oh . . . and lest we think it can’t happen in our sport, my personal favorite, not only because it happened so recently, but because there are literally scores of blistering articles about him: High school x-country coach charged with supplying alcohol to a minor.

Just search “high school coach alcohol minor x-country” and see what kind of gem this guy was to the girls on that team. I think the first 50 hits are for this coaches’ exploits.

What do all of these articles have in common? A coach who abused his role as a mentor for minors. These are merely some of the more egregious incidents, but the abuse occurs in all manners and on all levels. Coaching is not somehow above the worst of human nature. Discrimination, abusive incompetence, and petty favoritism seems to rank prominently among complaints. Yes, these are certainly interesting Sandusky-ish times we live in. Thankfully one NHFS affiliate recently got a clue and effectively eliminated transfer restrictions.
