No kidding. Why would anyone stick with track if they were so good on the gridiron?

A 6.7 yard average is very good. Now that he's done with track he will put on 30-50 pounds and be a force.

Jeff Demps, a silver medalist for the United States at the London Olympics as part of the men's 4x100 meters relay team, has signed up to play in the National Football League (NFL), the league's website reported on Tuesday.

Demps, a running back with the University of Florida, skipped the 2012 NFL draft in order to focus on making the U.S. Olympics team.

NFL.com said Demps had filed papers with the league and would be available as a free agent.

The Florida native made 2,470 rushing yards and had 23 touchdowns in four years for the Gators, where he was also effective on kick-return duties.

Demps won a national football championship with Florida in 2009 while also winning national NCAA titles in the 60 meters indoor and 100 meters outdoor.

I used to be excited about Demps' potential as a sprinter and thought he could be an Olympic medal contender. But the past 4 years have shown that is unlikely. He was better as a high schooler than now. I'm not sure whether football was the the only issue, because this year he was focused on track. However, football injuries and spring ball likely did interfere with both his commitment and performance.

He should go play ball now, however. That's where his living will be most secure.
