If men's Olympic distances 800m - 10000m were scored like cross country meets where lowest score wins, and you took the best placing Kenyan, Ethiopian, and American from each race, here's what you would get:
800m: Kenya 1, Ethiopia 6, US 4
1500m: Kenya 7, Ethiopia 6, US 2
SC: Kenya 1, Etiopia 4, US 6
5000m: Kenya 3, Ethiopia 2, US 4
10000m: Kenya 5, Ethiopia 3, US 2
Total scores: Kenya 17, Ethiopia 21, US 18
For those who argue the U.S. lacks depth, let's continue to the second place runner from each country in each event (Note: Since Ethiopia had only one qualifier in the 800m and 1500m, for argument's sake, assume a score one greater than the total number of entrants in that event):
800m: Kenya 3, Ethiopia 9, US 5
1500m: Kenya 11, Etiopia 13, US 4
SC: Kenya 3, Ethiopia 12, US 8
5000m: Kenya 5, Ethiopia 11, US 7
10000m: Kenya 12, Ethiopia 4, US 13
Total scores: Kenya 34, Ethiopia 49, US 37
The U.S. clearly outclasses Ethiopia in both 1st and 2nd runners, and closely trails Kenya in both regards. Say what you want about our female performers, but I make the case that the U.S. men are formidable competitors on the world scene again.
Of course, the marathon may really throw the numbers out of whack tomorrow...unless one or more of the U.S. men can again step up. Discuss.
