I could have lasted just over 3000 meters, maybe 3400 meters, but then I still would have been lapped.
How about you guys?

I would have basically been drafting off of you.
If I ran 13:40 pace the whole time I could've won.
I'd have lasted maybe 9 laps, but would not have been lapped
I'd have been 150 meters ahead the whole way.
3k meters, maybe 3400.
However far 4:50 miles would get me.
I would have made it to 3k, and then would have been promptly left for dead. It would have been fun though.
Why didn't rupp and lagat go hard as hell at 3k?

Because going hard as hell while wearing running shorts is really embarrassing.

Except the field would have followed you at that pace and then dropped a 52. Even if the pace was sub 13 the medalists would have been similar (definitely Farah/Gebremeskel up front).
All these posts saying "WELL IF YOU CAN'T KICK WITH THEM AT THE END WHY DON'T YOU SET A HARD PACE?!?!?!" don't account for the fact that the fastest kickers are also the fastest runners in general so they will just sit on whatever pace anyone wants to set then make a move when they see fit. If the dude from Azerbaijan goes out and runs 13:10 pace (I'll even let him run a PB) you bet your ass he is getting mowed down at the end by the usual suspects. You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't.
I think at that venue, with that crowd, I could have found something extra to hang on and run a 5 second 3k pr. At which point I would have promptly stopped and celebrated my accomplishment

Tell that to Hans-Jörg Kunze and Dieter Baumann, it will make them feel better. About losing to me by 50 meters.
Two laps, FTW.
8 laps.
Maybe 3 laps. This would have required me to max out and pretty much stumble off the track in exhaustion at the end of my 3 laps. Even then, I would have been at the back of the pack.

Does anyone have the 3200 split? If it was no faster than 9:20 I might have held on for 10 laps at that pace.
3200, but no more.
5400m

I agree with what you're saying for the most part. But if I'm in the Olympic 5k, I'm going to lose by running close to my PR, not a minute slower.
