What are some lessons that the industrialized/non African countries of the world can learn from Rupp's performance? Call me a racist, but seeing a white guy out kick several East Africans at the end of an endurance race should be very encouraging. Although Rupp is very talented, I think practical lessons can be taken away from his development.
Here are a few things that come to my mind:
1. Progression is Key:
After Rupp had doubled at NCAAs, Salazar was asked what he had learned from Bob Kennedy. Salazar stated something along the lines of "Bob told me to not give Galen everything in one year". As well as this, Salazar was very insistent on increasing Rupp's weekly mileage by only 5-10 miles per week every year.
2. Implement Good Running Form At an Early Age:
Part of Rupp's natural talent undoubtebly comes from his smooth stride. I think that in general, the sooner a runner can learn good running form, the better.
3. Speed Matters:
After years of Salazar constantly harping on Rupp to run 800/1500 meter races, to work on form, to do sprints at the end of a workout, I think it all came together those last 100 meters of Rupp's 10k.
Thoughts? Comments? Please don't be one of the guys who say "Salazar has found a new brand of PEDs". Congrats to Mo for winning gold in front of his home crowd as well.
