didn't have the heart to do that to his pal on his home track.

I was thinking the same thing or that he at least could have made it a photo finish.
Rupp let up at the finish...again. Thank god it wasn't close!
he left too much of a gap.
I thought so too, he closed on Mo.
Could have made it closer, but I think Mo would have still held him off.
Great race by both of them.
There will be no contrarians in this thread.
ahh, no. Farah is the better runner and Rupp gave it his all.
Stupid to suggest he didn't win because he's friend's with Farah.
Rupp will be more than happy with a silver given the depth of that field.

dude, it's an olympic gold medal. I hope you're trolling.
I agree with everyone who thinks that Rupp may have let his friend/training partner win Gold. It is hard to tell. Now that Rupp has a Silver, his next target is GOLD. That is what Farah got and he won't let him have it. Its time the two split up so Rupp could have a chance to win GOLD for USA!
Woohoo, the first coulda/woulda/shoulda thread already!
Why don't you guys go out for a run? Trust me, you'll be flying--I remember when I ran, right after Shorter's first medal...
I think that Rupp would have to have moved up on Farah's shoulder closer to the beginning of the last lap to have a shot at the win. And if he did that Farah probably would have run even faster. Would like to have seen it but what a great race anyways! Great win for Farah with his country yelling and screaming for him!
Farah's goal = to win.
Rupp's goal = to medal.
Both achieved them. But yes, if Rupp had been up front earlier in the last 400, then he could have battled Mo for the gold.
I must admit throughout the race Rupp looked more comfy than Farah - I was a bit concerned about Mo. However come the last 200 it was clear to me Farah had lots left in the tank. No way Rupp would have taken him.
Next year at Worlds....

Exactly right.
If he recognises this and decides to race for the win in the 5000m, it could be very, very exciting...
Just watched the end of the race again. This is one of the lamest threads I've ever seen. Trolls.

Does this make Al the best distance coach in the world??
You fanboys are ridiculous. Rupp ran really well but was beat by his teammate who is just a bit better. It is the Olympics. You don't just let your friend win the gold. Especially considering that Mo already has World gold.
Honestly, I thought it was a clear "loss". Farah took off a little earlier, gained separation and finished stronger & faster. Rupp was battling for 2nd... and when he had it, Farah was too far ahead, with too little track to go.
