My predictions:
Final, in order of finish:
Blake
Bolt
Gay
Powell
Gatlin
Bledman
Collins
Bailey
I put Collins in the final because of his consistency and ability to run rounds.
I put Bailey in the final because I think that he is only just beginning to realize his potential, and because he demonstrated at trials his ability to run rounds.
I put Bledman in the final because of his demonstrated consistency at low-mid 9.9x
I guess I picked my finalists based on consistency this year, rather than on the potential for brilliance.
Blake/Bolt are my top 2, they're clearly ahead of everybody on the season...Powell and Gatlin are just not that fast, and Gay hasn't had enough time to get there. Blake will win, because Bolt has already lost.
In the battle for bronze, I don't think that Collins has a realistic shot, he would need to run a huge PB. I also think that the moment will be too big for Bailey, and that he will underperform, but I look forward to seeing him in the coming years.
That leaves Gay, Powell, Gatlin, and Bledman. It's tough to pick from among these 4 guys. Although Bledman has been good this season, he is just that one step slower than those other guys, so far, and neither Powell nor Gatlin has demonstrated a race that is good enough to beat Gay, as long as Gay does not get a crap start. Both Powell and Gatlin were running very fast, very early this year. It has been a long season for them already, and they seem to have been in top form already for a long time.
Gay, OTOH, really seems to have been competing while training, so I think that while we will see an improved Gay, the best we could expect from Gatlin and Powell would be to re-create their earlier performances--which wont' be good enough to beat Gay if Gay has improved by even .05, which I think is a reasonable assumption.
My alternative list, assuming the first is totally wrong, is:
Blake
Gay
Gatlin
Bolt
Powell
Bailey
Collins
Bledman
Having Bolt finish out of the medals is a stretch, I know. G&G would have to have tremendous SB races, or Bolt would need a fail. Of all the competitors, Bolt has the greatest opportunity for not only excellence, but for failure--the other top guys are just too consistent. Even with failure, he will probably be good enough to beat Powell, who looks to have a worsening rather than an improving last 50m--but if he flames, I think he'll grip, tie up, and not be able to catch either Gay or Gatlin.
My fantasy order, maintaining SOME respect for reality?
Powell
Gay
Bledman
Blake
Bolt
Gatlin
Bailey
Collins
