would he?
would he?
My PR is in the low 16s. I gained 40 pounds and still ran 18:00.
I think Haile could do it without much problem.
he could go 14:00
It's all about perspective. That's adding about 70% of his body weight. Say you weighed 170 lbs and gained 70% of your body weight. You'd be pushing 300 lbs. Not so easy anymore. Plus he's short, and being short and fat isn't a great combo. Based on his background he should easily be able to do it, but going more than a minute or so faster wouldn't be easy.

Sorry for the double post ^^^. I tried changing my user name but did it too late.

Yes but Haile weights 120 or so MAX. If he gains 80 lbs he weights 200lbs, and remember he is tiny.
A 200lbs Haile would have trouble breaking 20.
Whoopi goldberg maybe weights 80 pounds more (about 200 I would guess) - and she could probably break 20 so why not him? He has more running experience than she.
I was a mediocre D3 guy, packed on 35 pounds and still ran low 16's. I think the best runner in history could still break 20 even with 80 extra pounds.
According to the formula 2 seconds per mile per pound of fat gained / lost , Haile would be 8:17 slower over a 5k (2*80*3.10685 / 60)
12:39 (his WR) + 8:17 = 20:56, assuming he gained primarily fat and maintained similar muscle mass. However if Haile gained mostly muscle, I would guess his 5k would be closer to 18:39. Eighty pounds is a lot, He is 5'5 and currently about 120 pounds. His healthy range would be about 105-140. He could probably still do quite well around 150 -160 lbs, but 200 might be a different story.

Most people don't understand how 200 lbs look on a 5'5" frame.
This is what it looks like:

Did Haile gain 80 lbs? Will he gain 80lbs by race time? Do you have a life? Thats as about the same as asking... What if the world was flat.
Maybe even going backwards. 200 is way big, but he is SO good

For what its worth, my 40 pounds brought me up to 180.
20 minutes is not THAT fast. I have no proof he could do it, but I reckon someone in 13:10 shape who puts on 80 pounds could run 20:00 if someone in 16:30 shape (me) can put on 40 pounds and run 18:00 (I did, of course, have a few good months of training for that 18:00).
Who knows!

If he had the aerobic base of a 2:04 marathoner and 12:39 5k runner, yes.

uhhhhh no
If he ran with a 40# vest, he would eventually break two hours for the marathon, easily.

Whoopi's last 5k was a 32:42. Not exactly close to breaking 20.
