I always skip them (but am considering experimenting).

I always drink water if i have a chance to. I overheat though, starting to think I might have hyperthyroidism.
Only in races longer than 10ks
At the very least I dump it over myself. Seems to help cool me.
is this Rupp's condition????
Many race directors who think ahead never put the water stations near the mile markers.
History shows you have the water people yeling "water" and the ile split person saying the time, you can imagine the problems. The worst is the people who slow down to drink, and congestion forms near the mile marker. The sign isn't always higher than 5 ft. so you can easily lose the mile split.
A third problem is the volunteer who does the mile split. Where do they stand? IN FRONT of THE CLOCK!! Arrrgh!
Think!!! The runner likes to see the clock as they are coming up on the mile marker. But they can't if you are in front of it!

Only if the race is longer than a half marathon.
You also need to HOPE that the people manning the water station know what they are doing. A friend of mine (runner) was staffing a station in a marathon with other people from her work. Someone there decided that marathoners only want a sip of water in their cup and literally put a few SPOONFULLS of water into the cups. Fortunately my runner friend put them straight, and they filled the cups.

Very good points. I hate water stations right at the mile markers.

THIS. And if the HM is in hot conditions, 75+ degrees. But on a normal day for a decent runner, meaning they finish under 90 minutes, water is not necessary IMHO.
Loves it when they scoops that cool clear water out of a plastic garbage can. Reckon they get it downstream from the herd?
full cups are bad - spills everywhere. 1/2 to 2/3 full is the way to go.
I ran the Lincoln Marathon a few years ago. They actually use water cups that have lids and straws. It was awesome. You were able to get a lot more fluids in you without slowing down and didn't spill it all over you.
I've seen races use the small water bottles (4 or 6 oz??), and they are also great. Just using a paper cup sucks.
The mass hysteria over hydration mandates that race directors have to stuff race courses full of water stops or else face a sh t storm on the internet after the race. Also, people gallowalking will be on the course many times longer than the first finishers. They will actually need fluids if it is warmer out.
Personally, I will only take a quick gulp or two during a 10k, even in the heat, just to keep my mouth from drying out. I will drink during a 1/2. I once saw a pretty fast guy (70 min 1/2) sieze up from dehydration at a half on a fairly cool day. He did not drink at all during the race, felt fine, but dropped to the ground at the post race.
