I am reading Daws "self-made olympian." His long run is often 30miles. Anyone else out there run this far in their long runs for the marathon? I always thought you were just supposed to run as long as your marathon time (2:40, 2:30, 2:20 etc).

Long training runs: 32, 40, 36, 42, 44, 23-23-22 (Fri-Sat-Sun), 32-12 (weekend total), 38,...........oops, sorry, just noticed "...for the marathon?" part. Oh well, I typed it in--I'll leave it.
There is no etched in stone "you are suppose to do this" for any one person. There are some guidelines that fit for general fitness development. After general fitness is reached, a person has to decide which training patterns fits their needs (physical and mental).
I was doing 75 miles weeks training for a 100k while some friends were doing 100-105 mile weeks training for a marathon.
I wouldn't advise a diet of long runs beyond 30 miles unless you have the diet/refueling part down pretty good--it can wear you down.
LOng run territory is often referred to as that area where your glycogen stores are depleated and you are running on fat stores.I can not understand why we run 20 miles then give it up.It takes me 2.5hrs to do 20 miles. Why not run another hour and make the first 2.5hrs worth the effort.Any one have any ideas regarding this?
Also, consider the approach that the long run is 20-23% of the weeks volume, measured both in distance and time. Example: Geb's long run is 3hr long/32mi. He run's approx. 15hr/140+mpw.
A panel of four coaches were polled on marathon training in Running Times about a year or two ago, and they agreed that a long run of more than three hours is too much. (One of the coaches was Joe Vigil; I forget the others.) It might be that it didn't take much longer than three hours for Daws to do 30 miles. In "Running the Lydiard Way", a weekend long run of 2-3 hours is suggested, so the agreement goes even a bit broader.
I just picked up a copy of that book at my local coffeshop/used bookstore for $2.75. Amazon.com has two used copies at $35 or more each; Ebay doesn't have any. I think I made a steal!
the longer the better!!!!!!!!
i agree with megaman, longer the better,up to what youre body can handle.most mortals can only handle up to 3 hours.
i heard naoko takahashi can run up to 70k in one day!
