Hopefully everyone can take 2 minutes to read this and then 2 minutes to contact the NCAA in a class manner.

Goodwin has signed with Nike so he doesn't fall under NCAA jurisdiction anymore.
Should I take 20 minutes to read the rules themselves before I form my own opinion?

If you have time to look at the NCAA rule book, go ahead as we don't.

Whatever the rules say, if that is the result it's idiotic and the rules need to be changed.
I'm sure it's like everything else - it's all driven by football and basketball and the rules' effects on other sports where the rules don't make sense is collateral damage.
I will never forget Edwin Moses' college coach ( name long forgotten), in 1976 at the USA training camp in Plattsburgh NY ( about 2+ hrs south of Montreal ), having to stand outside an 8' chain link fence timing Edwin's repeat 200's..... Being young and stupid, it never dawned on me what a travesty that was..... ( I am no longer young- still stupid though) ..... Why was he not allowed inside the track facility?
didn't Bobby Knight and coach K coach in the olympics?

Head Coach: Mike Krzyzewski, Duke University
Assistant Coach: Jim Boeheim, Syracuse University
But they don't coach any collegiate athletes
16.8.1.3.1 Involvement of Coaching Staff. An institutional coaching staff member may engage in coaching activities with a student-athlete during the particular event in which the student-athlete competes, regardless of whether the event occurs during or outside of the institution's declared playing season. (See Bylaw 17.1.5.4) (Adopted: 1/12/04 effective 8/1/04)
This bylaw is under other competitions in the rule book, which is where the Olympics fall under...the bylaw that is in 17 is in regards to Olympic And national development programs
And these coaches are designated as the Olympic Team coaches... so in both cases fit the NCAA rules as referenced in the link above
Update at 12:08 pm ET: We've received an update from a collegiate coach who was trying to coach in the Olympics. He writes: "I am now told if a letter says you are working with the ngb that comes specifically from the ngb, that will suffice and that's how arizona is getting around it."
That's better but the fact that you even have to get that is absurd. The NCAA needs to get a brain and stop looking at the letter of the law and start looking at the intent.

I'm pretty sure that is false. I saw UT football coach Mac Brown talking on the news last night about how Goodwin will be back at football practice after the Olympics. He couldn't play football for UT if he was a professional athlete.
I still don't understand this. Amy Deem from the university of Miami is the women's coach and there are college runners in the olympics.
one more time for those that are slower. If you are not a memeber of a National Governing Body official coaching staff (Amy Deem is the USA coach, it is official), you can not coach your athlete.
So if a kid from State U is a junior javelin thrower, and thier State U coach isn't an official "pick a country" national coach, then they can't coach them.
It is a goofy rule. The problem is, that schools that choose to enforce this won't allow the coach to use university funds to pay for the trip.
I know of 2 coaches on a staff that have been told to cancel their flights and hotels, they can't go.
This is unbelievably idiotic of the NCAA, but then again, not really.
Here is a great example... Cliff Rovelto coaches all three High Jumper's on the US team, and one of them is a collegian under him at K-State. So now, he can instruct Jesse and Jamie, but has to sit by idle as someone else who has no clue about Erik, instructs him. Sorry folks, that ain't happening!
What page is 16.8.1.3.1 on in the pdf'd rule book? I can't find it.

Sorry, correction, the 16.8.1.3.1 bylaw is in the d2 and d3 manual, doesn't seem to be in d1.....

NCAA stance in regard to NCAA coaches coaching student-athletes with remaining eligibility at the 2012 Olympic Games and 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships
After consultation with the NCAA national office last week, the USTFCCCA national office was notified this afternoon that the NCAA will not issue any penalties against coaches or institutions who provided coaching to student-athletes with remaining eligibility at the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships; nor will the NCAA issue any penalties to a coach or institution who provides coaching to a student-athlete with remaining eligibility at the 2012 Olympic Games.
The NCAA national office and USTFCCCA will be working in conjunction with the NCAA Presidential Rules Working Group to revise current rules (as they relate to providing coaching outside of a sports’ established playing and practice seasons) that bar coaches from coaching student-athletes with remaining eligibility at such events as the Olympic Games, World Championships, and World Junior Championships.
I received this email as well. What is the response from the Brojo's regarding this matter? I would like to see a revision to their current story. Don't get me wrong we need to keep the pressure on the NCAA but currently their story is out of date and inaccurate.

Not true at all. There have been several athletes who were professional in one sport and came back to compete in the NCAA in another sport.
Correct. You can compete as a professional in one sport and retain eligibility in another. Football, baseball and basketball players do it all the time. Usually it involves minor league baseball. I recall one former NFL player who came back and ran the 400m at Drake in the 1990's.
