How do you avoid heel strike on a downhill? It seems to trash my knees & quads if I just let it rip, but it trashes other parts of my body if I brake on the way down. Any advice or experience?

You need to get into a Vibram Five Finger or something similar. Also, use shorter strides with a high cadence...lean forward a bit, too.
you need to run backwards. this is the most efficient way to run downhill
rather than think about the landing, you have to think about how you raise your foot. remember to bring your knees up etc. and you should be fine
Take the downhills real easy when training (I sometimes zig zag down if they are steep).
Go ahead and let it rip during a race and plan on walking funny for a couple of days.
