He ran a 4:40 second 1500 in the Stockholm Olympics. Jordan Hasay ran a 4:14.50 as a 16 year old.
Middle School girls regularly run better than 4:40.
BTW Thorpe was only 5'8" and 185.

His pr was 3:58
You know Thorpe won the dec. 1500 in 1912, don't you?
Even the winning time in the final in the open 1500 at the 1912 Olympics was only 3:56. One of the semifinals in the 1500 was won in 4:27. All of these times suck compared to modern times with modern training, tracks, and equipment.
When you compare Thorpe's 1500 with what people were running in the open 1500 in 1912 and consider the fact that he ran it as part of the dec, and won in the 1500, I don't think the time sucks. You are comparing apples to oranges.
You think he actually ever trained for the 1500?

Let's say 4:40 1500m converts to a 5:00 1600m. The fastest 1600m for a middle school girl listed on athletic.net (4,500+ girls) is 5:13.
http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Division/Event.aspx?DivID=35080&Gender=F&Event=53Are you talking about middle school girls in Kenya?

FYI: Middle School is either grades 7 & 8 , or 7, 8 & 9.
No, I just did a google search for fastest middle school girls 1500. There were tons between 4:50 and 4:39.
Here's an 11 year old boy running a 4:50.
BTW lapping the slow white kid cost him a couple seconds.

Can you show us those search results of middle school girls regularly running sub 5 in the 1500m?

This is obviously a math-based response.
Q: Tons of middle school girls run sub 4:50 for 1500m? How many middle school girls run sub 4:50? (Hint: Base your answer on the weight of the average speedy girl).

Comparing tons of middle school girls to a man is laughable, 95% of those girls will hit puberty and either remain injured or considerably slower in 3-4 years time.
You're also comparing times of woman to a man in a multi-event competition over 50 years ago.

100 years, just over, to be more exact. The 1912 Olympic Decathlon was held July 13th to 15th.

Intermediate School: Grades 6, 7, 8
Middle School: 7, 8
Junior High School: 7, 8, 9
These are standard designations. If a school runs 7-9 and calls itself a middle school that is not the norm.
I went to a 7,8 school that called itself a Junior High School, and most of the time I hear 6-8 as a middle school.
Lets remember history and what were people, training, philosophy and even him was all about at that time. He was just doing things out of the blue without any specific training; he was not even a runner, let alone a full fletch "overall athlete" but he did perform (for that time) if you research his history and what happened, you will see that he never did any training at all, he was just doing things out of blue!! then goes to Hollywood (gets used) and finish as a hopless alcoholic; a very sad story which reflects (analogy) what happened to our American Indians nations all across the United States. looking at an individual, dont forget to look at the ERA and what was happening at the time.

Uh, not bad for someone who was also a dominant player in college and pro-football.
Like to see someone duplicate that resume, today.
You said it all at the start. He was 5'8 185. That is a very stocky short guy that could pretty much beat any body in any sport. For playing baseball and football, and doing 9 other events, I think 4:40 is pretty impressive to me.
I San Diego County Middle Schools run 7-9. The schools are not called Junior HS. I consider San Diego the norm. Jr HS or Middle School, take your pick.
OP IS RETARDED.
How far can anyone here throw a discus? Long jump? What's your power clean?
Distance runners are supposed to be smarter.
I've seen thousands of dumb threads on this message board, but this one might take the cake!
