Honest poll: did you ever drink and drive?

I was pulled over when I was 22, fresh out of college. I was celebrating a job offer, got way to drunk, and thought it'd be ok to drive home. The judge gave me the riot act, but didn't throw the book at me, punishment-wise. Instead, he ordered me to attend AA, as well as do my community service volunteering in the hospital. Specifically, I had to spend time with trauma victims, some of whom were hurt in drunk driving accidents. It was a life-changing experience. I quit drinking all together.

Now, as a father of 3, I'm completely honest with my kids about the past. I think that's the best way to prevent them from making the same types of mistakes. I tell show them from a real-life perspective the consequences of some mistakes. You're right though. Drunk driving is still a problem.

Regretfully i have drove drunk many times. Luckily i never hurt anyone. The last time i was in professional school and got stopped at a check point. The cop saw i had an out of state license, asked why i was in town and when i told him, he started talking about people he knew who taught at my school and didn't pay attention to much else. Luckily he let me pass. I about puked when i pulled away. Never drove drunk again and rarely drink at all.

You got that right. Stupidity. Drove drunk (and stoned) many times before I was 21, back then the legal drinking age was 18 though that didn't stop me from doing it when I was 16. Thankfully and luckily never hurt anyone or crashed.

The night my high school b'ball team won a championship, we celebrated. It was a real Hoosiers story, and I was a big star in our little town. That night one group of friends got in one car, me and others got in another. The other car crashed, killed one of my high school buddies, and so 33 years later...

Oh yea. Driven drunk many times. Sometimes when you live in the middle of nowhere in the desert or grasslands, it's one of the few things to do for fun. A driver can see the next driver five miles away, so you slow down and don't freak out. The cops never came around. Social taboos get thrown out the window when there is no society.

Also, I have driven drunk way too many times in crowded cities. That's stupid.

Driving through mountains and forests is a little dicey. Except for the north woods, everything east of Nebraska is not good territory for drunk driving.

I'm actually more scared by the times I've driven on no sleep. Drunk driving, you can at least try to be careful. Tired driving, there's not much you can do but hope nobody does anything dumb around you. My uncle almost killed himself falling asleep at the wheel.

i've read people drive 5000 miles under the influence before being involved with the police.

probably so with me. i flipped my Volvo Amazon(144) in 1981 after a 5th of jack daniels imbibed at a pretenders concert. i was 26; i still shudder to think how it could have ended. upside down in a creek. my girlfriend had a sprained neck and that was the total bodily damage. thank allah(insert spirit) for the swedes and their safety obsessions. that car was still drivable after the crash.

i was lucky. they released me after an hour or so. in jan. 1982 a new law required 48 hours in jail. i went to some ed classes; gory movies, drinks math, etc.

plus, me and the boys would drive to NY state from Erie, PA to drink at 18 in high school.

now i vacation in sweden where the bac limit is 0.02% and i'm super-careful. why, i've even read that hotrodders in sweden in the 50s and 60s drew straws for the dd. safety was banged into them. it should be the same here.

This will happen to me if I don't watch it. Guaranteed. I've pushed the envelope too many times. I drink so rarely now that I get sick if I have a couple drinks. Thankfully, that's a wonderful motivator to keep me from drinking while I'm out.

I've done a lot of dum sh*t in my life, but driving drunk is not one of them.

You literally have to be stupid beyond belief to drive drunk, especially in an urban area.

25 y/o male here, that gets drunk about twice a month, always with friends and the pressure to drive.

Honestly though even though I'm young I don't have the energy to get wasted every weekend.

Yes, I drove drunk on a single occasion, and got arrested on suspicion of DUI after failing a field sobriety test and blowing 0.071. The incident resulted from a combination of poor planning, impaired judgment and lack of experience with alcohol. Never in my right mind have I ever believed that it's OK to drive drunk, nor did I ever repeat that mistake after the fact.

It's actually more like once ever 27,000 miles, which I think explains why so many people drink and drive.

I had a big problem drunk driving. I never had real parental influences in my life. Never had anyone rigidly define right and wrong for me. I'd self-test before driving, and if I felt comfortable, screw it. Never got pulled over, never got hurt, never hurt anyone. And yeah, maybe I was lucky, or maybe I was able to safely drive while drunk. Who knows? I stopped doing it after getting hired. There was no use throwing away a career for something dumb like drunk driving. I was 24 then. The bad part or me is I still don't have any regret or remorse about it...it was just life, something I did. Oh well. That part of my life is over.

1983-1992 I probably drove drunk 125-150 times. Never caught, even though there were times I bet I would not have been able to stand up out of the car.

I count myself to be incredibly lucky. And incredibly stupid. My parents were somewhat complicit as well - they knew I drove drunk, but because they did too, they couldn't really say anything.

The only way to stop people from driving while intoxicated is to make them see - in person - what happens when things do not work out. Make them visit with people their age who are now in 2yrs of PT learning to walk. That is the only way.

My most questionable one was when I was not of legal age when in college. Felt fine after having drunk heavily early that night, but knew if I got pulled over and blew a .05 or something similar I'd be in deep svit.

Oh heck yes man. Once crashed the car into the house. I guess I'm just lucky I guess. It did get me fired from my job a couple times though.
