Standard IAAF rules for breaking a tie: goes to the athlete with the higher number of points in most events.
The athletes must compete against one another all over again.
Rule 200, section 12

Thanks! Good to know that it's not up to the USATF officials to figure out.
What if they each outscored the other in the same number of events?I am thinking they add an extra event, technically to make it an undecathlon. The extra event would be best score in two rounds of bull riding. If neither athlete can complete an 8 second ride, a 50K racewalk serves as a second tiebreaker. If the tie remains, a modern dance competition is held, but is done so after a one day rest period.

In the multis you go to the number of events won, compared to the other competitor. If there is still a tie, you go to the highest single event point total.
I haven't checked, but are these IAAF rules?
Because IAAF had a rule for a tie to the next round (a coin flip) and USATF ignored it (or amended it after the fact).
Same thing would happen again (Usatf being reactionary instead of proactive) in this scenario.
We should start a thread where we come up with potential issues (and how best to solve them).
For instance, 3 way tie for 3rd. 3 way tie for second. Time limits on when run off is decided/run.
Forva three way tie, will officials supply a three sided coin?
Hot dog eat-off.

The IAAF rule you refer to is 167.2 and it only applies to heats, not to a final. The IAAF rule that applied in the Felix/Tarmoh case is 167.1 and it says that it should remain a tie.
There isn't an IAAF rule that applies for a tie in the final that someone is using for selection to another meet.
They should have a decathlon-off. The day after the decathlon, have another decathlon just for the two tied athletes.
