I haven't read the full article. But classy that Webb considers all of us on board with his 10 yr journey. Others with much less scrutiny, have complained huge about the actual posters and been insulting.

Well the way I look it is that an athlete can take the hostile comments and give them "I'll show them" toughness. Hostile comments are like taking a puppy and slapping it around and making him mean albeit mentally. But words do hurt but they can toughen athletes should have a thick skin.

I don't get what you are saying? Are you calling Tim Layden of Sports Illustrated a troll?

What random number are you talking about. Are you talking about how they miscaptioned the Webb photo at 3:55.43 and not 3:53.43. I hardly think that makes him a troll.

By the way, the article talks about a 2001 article Layden wrote on Ritz/Webb. I just googled and found it here:

If he was only good in one event, there wouldn't be any speculation about other events, or any threads about "he should move up to the 5k", or "he should move down to the 800", etc

Since he is good at every event, a wide range of people have different opposing opinions about what he should or shouldn't do, and it is impossible for him to make everyone happy.

For instance, I thought his 10k was brilliant, others thought it was the stupidest thing he ever did.

He should just have a plan and stick to it, and not worry about what his fans think. I'm glad he's going to be around for a long time because he's a great runner and very interesting to watch.

He's more a victim of the losers who have to be so critical. I talked to the father of an American Record holder about the jerks who accuse athletes of drugs and say they're washed up, etc. He said his daughter just laughs them off as the losers they are.

Some people can do that, others can't.

We have a local message board, there is a track/XC thread and much like letsrun, the anonymous cowards would attack people.

I am a very successful coach and I was the subject of many attacks directed at me and my athletes.

Some of them could handle it some couldn't. One girl was in tears at some false accusation about her. Other kids laughed it off.

Now, you have to register for the board and the attacks have stopped.

I'd like to see the anonymity of letsrun be taken away.

Why can't people just back off. You want to tell him he should move up to the 10,000? Fine, but people get too critical about it.

Webb has invited media into his home (remember that Cribs thing?) and his private life. If he doesn't like the attention, he shouldn't have done that.
