German Fernandez Interview: Only been running for 1.5 months

It will be good for him to move on ! New coach ( hopefully ) , new direction and maybe we get to see his mature potential. It would be good for him to get trials experience if he can qualify , over to Europe and run in some b-meets to build confidence.

I'm very happy to see German is so upbeat again, and moving on to a professional environment with his running. It will be interesting to see who he picks and where he decides to train.

As a Rupp fan I like this idea about as much as Robby Andrew fans liked him getting Webb as a training partner, not at all.

I mean like Robby talking about Webb getting him thinking about counting his steps during the day and stuff. I don't want Rupp going on any meatless German diets.

Rupp is having a much better career than Webb at this point.

I only think that GF would succeed under Al Sal if he had other 1500-5k guys to train with. Remember that the big reason that Webb and O'lionard left was that they didn't have any training partners.

I'm glad to see that Fernandez is leaving OK State on an upswing, and I hope he can rediscover his love for running and competing.

And no, I don't think there's any way he can make the Olympic team for 2012. Stay tuned for 2016...

Notice he was running well and then got injured running indoor meets, the same that happened before.

Why in blazes Smith would have him running on small indoor tracks is a mystery.

'Cause Smith is all about getting his money's worth out of the kid, not German's long term development.

I don't think that is an excuse. The Gouchers were primairly 5K runners when they started with Alberto. I think it would be good for GF to train with Rupp and build a deent base and develop strength which will help him in the 5K.

It's well known that Fernandez was offered a contract by Nike out of high school, where he would have gone and trained under Schumacher. While I am sure that contract will be much smaller, I am sure Schumacher still wants to train the kid, thinking that if he can just keep Fernandez healthy for two years straight, the kid will be one of the best runners in the U.S. again.

Dave Smith and Schumacher are best friends.

German should definitely NOT train "under" Schumacher.

He needs a coach who can help him to blossom.

Canova would be a good choice, or Salazar. And it's time for German to move up, run cross country again which he loves, and train for the distance events.

I would go with Bernard Lagat's coach if he signs with Nike. When was the last time Lagat was injured? Anyone remember? I don't!

Unfortunately, I think the fragility of GF will be his downfall. It won't matter where he is, or who he is training with, especially if he continues to repeat mistakes. I sincerely hope that i'm incorrect...oh, how I wish he could catch a 6 month string of uninterrupted training.

I think Salazar would be the coach and training organization to bring German back. I know Salazar would bring him on slowly over several years. Salazar would protect German.
