Hi,
I'm a runner living in Boulder, Colorado. For the last couple of years I've been a recreational runner, this fall I'm taking things a bit more seriously and planning to run a marathon for the first time (not sure which yet, quite possibly Chicago).
In the last few months I've raced 20 mins for 5K, and 42 mins for 10K at sealevel, which makes me believe that 3:10 - 3:15 is a reasonable goal for a debut marathon, but I've also raced 10K in Boulder and only managed 45 minutes.
Here's my question: The marathon training program I'm following builds to marathon-pace tempo runs of 10-15 miles, and also includes track sessions of intervals of various lengths at "10K pace". If my (sea level) goal marathon pace is 7:30 /mile (i.e. 3:15), but I'm doing my tempo run at altitude where my 10K race pace is only 7:15 / mile, how should I compensate? If I run 15 miles at altitude at say 8:00 / mile, is that equivalent to running 15 miles at sea level at 7:30 / mile - or would I be better off just running as far as I can at 7:30/ mile, even if that ends up being a lot less than 15 miles? And if I run mile repeats at 7 mins / mile at altitude, is that equivalent to running repeats at 6:30 / mile at sea level?
I know these are very slow times for this board, but any advice would be much appreciated!
